Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../ Tuesday to Wednesday / Tuesday is expected to be
fairly quiet as a weak impulse moves out of the southern
panhandle this morning, ending the light snowfall this morning.
Daytime and into the evening should be quiet partly to mostly
cloudy skies and winds on the lighter side. Speeds under 15 mph
except for a period of 25 kt winds.

The next weather system is will be moving into the northern gulf
Tuesday night out of south central Alaska. The low will then move
SE along and over the panhandle through Wednesday afternoon. This
low will track fairly similar to the one on Saturday night. Light
snow amounts for most of the panhandle with maybe 1-2 for the
northeast gulf coast and Chichagof coastal area. 2 to 3 inches for
Lynn Canal, Glacier Bay, Eastern Chichagof Island, Admiralty and
Kuiu Islands. Southern panhandle should see 1 to 3 inches as well.
The coastal areas from about Sitka south to Prince of Wales will
likely see a mix or rain with the system too. A brief period of
freezing precipitation may fall Wednesday and storm is wrapping
up. It is a small chance but have included it in the forecast
package.

Wrangell, Petersburg, and Juneau look to have a better chance of
snow fall accumulation. Have posted a winter weather advisory for
snowfall with expected amount of of 3 to 6 inches for these areas.

The frontal band will be a quick moving systems and should be
through Southeast Alaska by Wednesday night. Wind speeds over the
central and Eastern Gulf of Alaska will increase to gale force
and spread southeastward on Wednesday.

.LONG TERM.../Tuesday onward/ Two well-defined low-pressure
systems will bring widespread and organized precipitation to the
region midweek and again by the end of the week. Increasing
confidence that precipitation will be a mix along the outer coast
from the first system and the second system may bring moderate
snowfall.

The long-term period begins with partly cloudy to clear skies with
an isolated chance of flurries along the outer coast Tuesday
morning. As the first well-developed low moves into the Gulf on
Tuesday night, expect temperatures to increase by Wednesday late
morning resulting in most areas along the coast changing from snow
to a mix of precipitation and possibly straight rain. Total
snowfall amounts look to remain below the advisory level for the
outer coast and near or above advisory elsewhere, with the rain
on snow leading to a hazardous morning and/or evening commute
Wednesday. This system has increased in speed again, which means
clear skies are possible Tuesday evening and again Wednesday
evening, with the quick moving system in the middle. Thursday
looks to be another clear day, with clouds increasing overnight
into Friday as the next low approaches.

The second low follows in a similar path as the first one and
could bring moderate to heavy precipitation to the panhandle.
EURO and GFS Ensembles are giving 50-70% chance of greater than
0.50" of QPF over 24 hours and 20-30% of greater than 1.00" of QPF
over 24 hours. QPF amounts like that would mean significant
snowfall if temperatures end up being cold enough to support snow.

Inside marine winds were increased in the Northern Lynn Canal
region through the long term as a result of a tighter pressure
gradient and outside waters were moderated to below gale-force.
Overall forecast confidence is average with the timing of the
system below average due to changes 3-6 hour speed ups each day.

As it looks, currently, a relatively strong and potentially impactful
frontal system looks to move into the eastern Gulf and Panhandle
for New Year's Eve(Friday) through New Year's Day holiday and into
the day on Sunday. The amount of snow received over the Panhandle
depends greatly on just how close the low and front get to the
Outer Coast before its track turns southeastward. This system
looks to be quite a bit slower moving than the previous few
systems that have impacted southeast Alaska. Current model
consensus suggests that the Panhandle could receive a significant
amount of snow for the New Year holiday weekend. Guidance suggests
that temperatures for that timeframe should remain plenty cold
enough for the precipitation to remain snow for the vast majority
of the Panhandle. Winds will possibly be gusty, potentially up to
around 40 knots, especially over marine areas just off the
northern Outer Coast, as the front approaches the Panhandle. There
is still a bit of model disagreement as to just how close the
weather system will get to the coast before diving southeastward.
So, we will continue to keep an eye on it.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for a quick moving system
to track across the region from NW to SE on Wednesday. Please see
the latest statement on that for further details.

A stronger system is expected to move over the entire Panhandle
on Friday. This system may produce 6 to 12 inches of snow by New
Years Day, then slowly move south through Sunday with additional
accumulations likely.

Behind this system very cold air will move in for next week with

...WINTRY MIX WEDNESDAY AND POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT STORM
FRIDAY...

A fast moving low will track across the Panhandle from
NW to SE on Wednesday. This system will produce 1 to 3 inches of
snow along coastal, southern areas, and northern Lynn Canal. In
addition, some mixing with rain is possible or a brief period of
freezing rain.

A stronger system is expected to move over the entire Panhandle
on Friday. This system may produce 6 to 12 inches of snow by New
Years Day, then slowly move south through Sunday with additional
accumulations likely.

Behind this system very cold air will move in for next week with
near record breaking low temperatures along with strong outflow
winds.
