across the Gulf and southeast Alaska from the southwest through 
the weekend. Outlook: The active weather pattern continues into

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Through Sunday/ A rather damp and breezy day in
some places today. Light rain has been an on and off occurrence
throughout the day for the outer coast and from the Central inner
channels northward. 24 hour rainfall has only been up to 0.3
inches at most with the highest amounts along the NE gulf coast
and in the higher elevations of the northern panhandle. Winds have
been a bit frisky in some areas, particularly in the Lynn Canal
and Skagway area. Gusts to 40 mph have been rather steadily
observed all day at Skagway and winds of 25 kt out of the S has
been a regular occurrence at Eldred Rock. S winds of 15 to 20 kt
have been observed elsewhere in the inner channels today.

Through the weekend, the weather can best be described as rainy
with some periods of dry, especially for the northern half of the
area. The southern panhandle is the exception with mostly dry
weather expected through Sat Evening. The periods of rain that are
currently occurring will become more steady and intensify
somewhat tonight through Sat morning before diminishing into Sat
afternoon as a trough/vort max moves up from the S. Around 2 to 3
inches of rainfall still expected for the Yakutat area through Sat
afternoon with lower amounts farther east and south.

Winds will also be at their highest this evening as the trough
approaches. Strong wind gusts to 40 mph are expected to continue
at Skagway tonight, and small craft winds of 25 to 30 kt will
continue through the night in Lynn Canal with northerly pressure
gradients remaining strong. These winds, as well as the 15 to 20
kt S winds elsewhere in the inner channels will begin to diminish
Sat as the ridge gets pushed into Canada and the pressure gradient
actually turns to the north ahead of the next front Sat evening.

Speaking of the next front, model agreement has improved compared
to yesterday at this time. Sat afternoon into Sat evening are
currently looking to be somewhat dry for many areas as the rain
gets pushed W by offshore flow. Main difference from yesterday
here is that the rain may not get pushed very far past Cape
Fairweather until rather late Sat night so Yakutat will likely now
stay wet through Sat and into Sat evening. Into this dry period
comes the front for late Sat night into Sun with rain expected for
many areas by midday Sun that will persist into Sun night. Wind
will also be a factor, but mainly for the Gulf waters. Widespread
25 to 30 kt SE winds will be blowing in the gulf Sat night into
Sun with gale force winds up to 45 kt likely near Cape Suckling
Sat night. Lighter winds expected for the inner channels (15 to 20
kt at most) Sun as the front moves in. Overall forecast
confidence is average to above average.

.LONG TERM.../Sunday to Friday/...As of Thursday evening. Model
solutions are in good agreement for the start of the long term
forecast and are moving towards higher confidence for a surface
Low moving into the eastern gulf late next week. Unfortunately,
this low will continue to support onshore flow, which will favor
cloud coverage, cooler temperatures, and precipitation. Thus,
wetter than normal and near to below-average temperatures for this
time of year are expected in the long term. In fact, the capital
city could close out the month with one of the top ten wettest
Mays in its history. With this in mind, we trended temperatures
in Upper Lynn Canal downward into the mid 50s. Rising freezing
levels with a possible atmospheric river for the southern
Panhandle early next week allowed us to warm temperatures Tuesday
for Ketchikan.

The max Gulf winds in the long term are predicted to be Sunday
morning near Yakutat due to a barrier jet. Winds likely will
increase once again late next week, as a low pressure probably
arrives. Widespread precipitation is expected through the
majority of the long term due to a trough over the north Pacific
and associated onshore flow. Showers linger through midweek until
the surface low brings an increase in rain rates.

Overall forecast confidence is higher than average.
