* WHAT...Dangerously cold wind chills expected. The dangerously
  cold wind chills will cause frostbite in as little as 10 minutes
  to exposed skin. Expect wind chills to range from 45 below zero
  to 65 below zero.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds gusting as high as 45 mph in the
  passes will result in periods of blowing and drifting snow, and

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Slowing down after a very active weather period over the next few
days as the storm track shifts to the south of our forecast area.
While the heavy snow and gusty winds have subsided, we are still
expecting snowfall accumulations of 1 to 3 inches across the
Central Interior today and an additional 1 to 2 inches across the
Alaska Range on Friday night into Saturday. A return of colder air
from the Arctic will move over northern Alaska on the weekend.
Expect temperatures to fall below zero and remain cold through
the following week.

.DISCUSSION...
A weather front extending from a low pressure over Kotzebue and
extending east across Tanana to Eagle and into the Yukon
territory is where there is some lingering snow showers today and
tonight on the Arctic front. A strong low will move into the
southern Bering Sea today and then to Bristol Bay on Friday, and
then into the northern Gulf of Alaska on Saturday. This system
will push one last burst of snow into the southern Interior
Friday night and Saturday before clearing skies and much colder
temperatures arrive. A tight northerly pressure gradient will
develop from an Arctic high pressure which will result in gusty
northerly winds and low wind chills along the west coast, over
summits, and in channeled areas of the Interior. The north
american model initialized the low pressure features well with
the strength and will be utilized within the first 24 hour period
while the GFS, Canadian and ECMWF was used the in the later
periods with the track of moving the low pressure system that will
bring precipitation to Alaska Range and southeast Interior on
Friday night and Saturday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
The North Slope will remain relatively quiet over the next couple
days as a cooling trend continues. Winds will be generally light
around 5 to 15 mph, except for increasing north winds to 30 mph at
Cape Lisburne and Point Hope tonight. Otherwise some fog and
flurries are possible along the coast today through Saturday. Will
see the stronger northerly winds across the eastern Brooks Range
starting tonight along the Point Lay and continue through Friday
which have decided to issue wind chill advisory for the northwest
Arctic coast. Winds will also increase Friday night into Saturday
for the eastern Brooks Range, mainly south areas of Atigun and
Anaktuvuk passes, but will continue to monitor as expect
potentially up to 60 below zero in the passes.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Dry conditions are otherwise expected into the weekend as colder
air filters across the area. Northeasterly winds will increase
across western Alaska today with gales developing south of St.
Lawrence Island over the marine area. The combination of winds and
cold surface temperatures will lead to wind chills from 30 to 40
below or colder. Already starting to see 40 below zero at Kivalina
with winds of 25 mph.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Expect some lingering light snow today with up to an inch in snow
accumulation from Tanana and eastward. Otherwise breaks in the
clouds will develop with cooling temperatures. Gusty winds 20 to
30 mph will develop over summits and in channeled areas on Friday
with wind chills to 30 below or colder in some locations will need
to monitor to see if may need to issue wind chill advisories for
these areas. Light snow will spread north of the Alaska Range on
Friday and into the Tanana Valley, bringing 1 to 3 inches of
snowfall through Saturday with heaviest amounts along the Alaska
Range and areas along and southeast of the Taylor highway.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
