Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
The extremely active weather pattern over northern Alaska will
quiet down over the next few days as the storm track shifts to the
south of our forecast area. The latest storm that brought heavy
snow, freezing rain, very strong winds, and blizzard conditions
is moving east to the Canadian border this afternoon. Heavy snow
and strong winds will continue to diminish from the west tonight.
Cold air from the Arctic will settle in with temperatures falling
well below zero over much of northern Alaska by the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
Low pressure and an associated weather front over the central and
eastern Interior will move into the Yukon Territory tonight.
Colder air will filter in behind the low with lingering light snow
along the trailing Arctic front into Thursday over the central
and eastern Interior. A strong low will move into the southern
Bering Sea on Thursday, to Bristol Bay on Friday, and then into
the northern Gulf of Alaska Saturday. This system will push one
last burst of snow into the southern Interior Friday and Saturday
before clearing skies and much colder temperatures arrive. In
addition, with high pressure poised over the Arctic, a tight
northerly pressure gradient will develop and result in gusty north
winds and low wind chills along the west coast, over summits, and
in channeled areas of the Interior.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
The North Slope will remain relatively quiet over the next couple
days with cooling temperatures. Winds will be generally light
around 5 to 15 mph, except for increasing north winds to 30 mph
at Cape Lisburne Thursday night. Otherwise some fog and flurries
are possible along the coast.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Blizzard conditions will end early this evening north of Kivalina
with diminishing winds. Some lingering snow showers are expected
over Kotzebue Sound and the Kobuk Valley tonight but dissipating
by morning. Dry conditions are otherwise expected into the
weekend. Northeasterly winds will increase across western Alaska
on Thursday with gales developing south of St. Lawrence Island
over the marine area. The combination of winds and cold surface
temperatures will lead to wind chills from 30 to 40 below or
colder.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Snow showers, some heavy at times with gusty winds, will diminish
from Fairbanks eastward tonight. Some of these snow showers will
result in low visibility in blowing and drifting snow at valley
level and over the highway summits. On Thursday, some lingering
light snow with little accumulation is expected from Fairbanks
east. Otherwise breaks in the clouds will develop with cooling
temperatures. Gusty winds 20 to 30 mph will develop over summits
and in channeled areas by Friday with wind chills to 30 below or
colder in some locations. Light snow will spread north of the
Alaska Range on Friday and into the Tanana Valley, bringing 1 to 3
inches of snowfall through Saturday morning.
