A 1001 mb low 350 nm north of Nuiqsut will move to 300 NM north of
Demarcation Point as a 1002 mb low by 4am Fri then continue moving
northeast. A low north of Russia will move to 100 NM north of 
Wrangel Island as a 996 mb low by 4am Fri, and to 200 NM north of
Utqiagvik as a 988 mb low by 4am Sat.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Showery and cooler weather will persist across much of northern
Alaska into the weekend. An unseasonably cold airmass over the
North Slope and Brooks Range will continue to bring flurries to
the Arctic Coast and accumulating snow to higher elevations. Up
to 2 inches of snowfall are expected along the Dalton Highway at
Atigun Pass through Thursday. The Bering Strait coast will remain
relatively dry the next couple days before a weather front moves
onshore on Saturday.

.DISCUSSION...
The forecast models are in good agreement with the general
location and movement of large scale synoptic features over the
next several days. A closed upper low over the Arctic Ocean will
remain nearly stationary into the weekend with pulses of energy
rotating around it and into northern Alaska. A longwave trough
extending southward from this low and draped along the west coast
will gradually shift east to the Alcan border on Saturday and
into Canada on Sunday. This will drag some of the chilly air over
the North Slope and Brooks Range across the Interior over the next
several days. A weather front will push into the northwest Arctic
coast on Friday, with a more significant front on it's heals
moving into the west coast on Saturday and across the Interior
Sunday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A little chilly for August with periods of fog, flurries and
mixed precip along the coast into Thursday. Rain and snow will
fall over the central and eastern Brooks Range with up to 2 inches
expected through Thursday at higher elevations above 3000 feet. A
weather front moving into the Chukchi Sea coast on Friday will
bring increasing southwest winds, precipitation, and slightly
warmer temperatures to the region.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A few lingering showers showers over the Yukon Delta will taper
off by Thursday will mainly dry conditions over the west coast
through Friday. Scattered showers from McGrath to Galena will
diminish on Thursday. Otherwise high temperatures will be in the
50's inland and in the 40's along the coast.

Central and Eastern Interior...
The most summer-like conditions across the state will be confined
to the eastern Interior mainly south of the Yukon River with
scattered showers and some isolated thunderstorms this afternoon
and evening. A band of more significant showers extending from
Tanana to Coldfoot will shift east Thursday afternoon bringing a
better chance of showers from Fairbanks to Fort Yukon. Cooler
temperatures will trickle into the area from the northwest
Thursday and Friday with highs mainly in the 50's, except in the
upper 40s in the Brooks Range. The upper Tanana Valley and
Fortymile country will be a bit warmer with isolated thunderstorms
on Thursday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Relatively quiet with mostly cloudy and a few showers the next
few days. A little bit of rain fell over the northern Yukon Flats
and some showers are possible into Thursday, but rainfall amounts
will be light. Minimum relative humidity will be above 40 percent
across the board except possibly dipping into the upper 30
percent range in the northern Yukon Flats on Friday. Some isolated
thunderstorms are possible today from Fairbanks to the Alcan
border late this afternoon and evening. On thursday, this area of
instability will shift east and be limited to the upper Tanana
Valley and Fortymile country.

.HYDROLOGY...
All sites remain below flood stage. The water level rise from the
1-2 inches of rain that fell over the central Interior is making
its way down the Chena, Tanana, and other drainages in the region
but the crest is well below the bank.
