a 1000 mb low moving to 100 nm N of Prudhoe Bay Fri morning. High
pressure will push SE over the Northwest Arctic Coast. Low
pressure will hold over the Eastern Arctic through Sat. A 1017 mb
high will move to 150 nm N of Wrangel Island Sat.

High pressure is pushing S over the Dateline while low pressure 
extends N over the Eastern Arctic. The trough will slowly weaken 
as high pressure pushes S and E across the Arctic Plain Sat. By 
Sun afternoon a 1021 mb high will be over the NW Arctic with high 
pressure over the Central Arctic Coast and the Arctic Plain, while
a 1012 mb low will develop 50 nm N of Bullen Point with low 
pressure extending to the E.

.SYNOPSIS FOR ARCTIC COAST...
High pressure near the 76N and the dateline will remain in place
as a 1007 mb low near Point Hope weakens over Kotzebue Sound this
afternoon. Low pressure over the Eastern Arctic will weaken as 
high pressure spreads over the area. A 988 mb low near St Paul 
Island will move to near Nunivak Island by 4am Mon, then move SE 
into the Gulf of Alaska.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
An active and messy weather pattern continues to move across
northern Alaska this afternoon. This system is bringing a mix of
rain and snow to the West Coast and Western Interior. Rain and
snow is expected to push east into Fairbanks by tonight and linger
through tomorrow evening. Heavy snow for higher elevations,
especially along the south faces of the central and eastern Brooks
Range is expected to ramp up this evening and last through
tomorrow. Cloudy conditions for most areas ahead of the next rain
and snow event for the Yukon Delta and Norton Sound region
starting tomorrow night.

.DISCUSSION...
The upper levels of the atmosphere will transition quite a bit
over the next several days. A closed low trough over the West
Coast will slide eastward and be a closed low near the eastern
Brooks Range by tomorrow afternoon. Ridging will build over the
West Coast by this time before another digging trough moves across
the Bering Sea and is located near the Kuskokwim Bay by Thursday
night. This closed low will then meander to southcentral Alaska by
Friday night, where northern Alaska will be over a general
troughing pattern.

Central and Eastern Interior...
A weather front is moving across the Central Interior and will
continue moving east tonight before stalling across the Interior
by tomorrow evening. Due to the tropical nature of this system,
there will be warmer air pushing northeastward with this system,
resulting in rain and snow for areas below 2000 feet. Particularly
for Fairbanks, primarily snow will develop tonight and remain as
snow with 3-5 inches of accumulation in the hills north of
Fairbanks above 1500 feet, but transition to rain in the valley by
tomorrow morning. In addition to the snow amounts in the hills,
this transition from snow to rain could lead to messy traveling
conditions for the morning commute and hence the reasoning for a
Winter Weather Advisory for the Fairbanks area. Other areas of
higher terrain in the Interior are expected to receive additional
snow amounts of 3-6 inches expected through tomorrow afternoon,
thus continuing the Winter Weather Advisory for the southeastern
Brooks Range and Central Interior and the Winter Storm Warning for
Upper Koyukuk Valley. The south slopes of the Eastern Alaska
Range will also receive a decent amount of snow, ranging from 5-8
inches from Trims Camp south through tomorrow morning. Thus, the
one change to the hazards for this forecast is a Winter Weather
Advisory for that zone, as opposed to only a Wind Advisory where
winds will gust to 65 mph north of Trims Camp through tonight.
Windy Pass along the Parks Highway expected to gust to 65 mph
through tonight as well. Otherwise, weather conditions quieting
down ahead of the next weather front that looks to reach the
Interior by Friday night. Temperatures remaining slightly below
normal going into the weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A trough of low pressure across the Arctic Coast will keep east to
southeast winds over the next several days. Relatively quiet
conditions, with Utqiagvik the only location along the coast that
has developed low stratus and fog this afternoon. Looks for these
conditions to continue ahead of high pressure building into the
area that will turn flow onshore out of the north by the weekend.
The south faces of the central and eastern Brooks Range will
continue to receive snow totaling 3-6 inches through tomorrow.
Southerly flow through the Brooks Range Passes will also remain
elevated with gusts to 35 mph expected through tonight.
Temperatures remaining near normal going into the weekend.

West Coast and Western Interior...
The mess continues for the region, as rain and snow continue
through tomorrow. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the
Upper Kobuk and Noatak Valleys of an additional 3-6 inches,
mainly east of Shungnak through tomorrow night. Another surface
low will track to the Kuskokwim Bay area tomorrow night, bringing
another round of rain and snow to the Yukon Delta and portions of
Norton Sound. Lower elevations will remain as rain with this
event, while areas like the Nulato Hills will receive snow
starting Thursday night and lasting into Saturday. Temperatures
remaining near normal over the next several days.
