Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Three separate lows are traversing the forecast area this
afternoon. One of the lows is rapidly developing across the Gulf,
the second is dying out along the coast of Southwest Alaska as its
energy transfers to the low in the Gulf, and the third low is
over the western Bering and its leading front is approaching the
Pribilofs and Unalaska this afternoon. The track of the center of
the low in the Gulf is holding most impactful weather to coastal
communities and the adjacent mountains. Very little in the way of
precipitation is making it over the mountains from Kenai-Soldotna
north. The 12Z Anchorage sounding continues to be unstable, but
the dry layer from about 780 mb/6,700 feet partially explains the
lack of precipitation in these areas. The rest is due to the large
distance from the center of the low.

A bit of rain shower activity is also impacting Bristol Bay area
roughly from Levelock south as that low rapidly weakens. Finally
the third large low over the far western Bering is producing a
large area of gales that will eventually spread over much of the
Bering, but is not producing much wind in excess of gale force.

In the upper levels, a double-barreled upper level low is over
the Gulf off the coast of Kodiak with another one over the Y-K
Delta. Ridging is over the central Bering, with another low over
the far western Bering. A 150 kt largely zonal jet streak extends
over the southern Bering, then dips southeastward from about Sand
Point around the base of the low off the coast of Kodiak.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The models are in decent agreement through Wednesday afternoon.
The greatest point of difference continues to be what the final
track of the low developing in the Gulf is. The GFS remains the
strongest and furthest south, resulting in the strongest winds
around the low and the barrier jet, but relatively little out of
the ordinary along the coast. An interesting point to note is that
the rest of the models have all largely latched on to the solution
the GFS was presenting yesterday, when it was also the strongest
and furthest south. Thus, despite the GFS being the outlier, the
model consensus moving towards the GFS solution may be on to
something. Nonetheless, for most of mainland Alaska these
differences don't present much change in impactful weather.
Overall forecast confidence is above normal.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Today
through Thursday afternoon)...

A low strengthens as it progresses across the Gulf tonight,
producing a storm-force barrier jet along the northern coast and
into the Gulf. The low weakens into Tuesday, though a tight
pressure gradient along the coast will drive gusty outflow winds
through Resurrection Bay, Prince William Sound, and the Copper
River Delta Tuesday morning. Precipitation will be limited mostly
to the coast Monday night, with localized areas of moderate to
heavy precipitation expected. Rain near the coast is expected to
transition to snow at higher elevations, with the snow level
hovering around 1500 ft.

For most of Southcentral, precipitation chances and cloud cover
will decline on Tuesday as a transient ridge moves in from the
east. Cloudy skies and a chance of precipitation linger in the
Copper River Basin and Prince William Sound as upper level
shortwaves associated with the low transit across the area. Light
snow is expected over the mountains and in the Copper River Basin,
though accumulations will be minimal in the valleys.

A weak front will move across Southcentral beginning Tuesday
evening. Shortwaves associated with the front, as well as a weak
surface low forming in the Gulf, will bring a chance for rain or
snow showers across Southcentral into Thursday afternoon.
Precipitation chances increase around Prince William Sound
Thursday as the low moves towards the northern Gulf coast. With
temperatures dropping near freezing along the coast Tuesday and
Wednesday night, lower elevations may see some rain/snow mix or
snow.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Tonight
through Thursday afternoon)...

Unsettled conditions will persist for much of the week as a
series of storm systems traverses from the Bering Sea to the
Southwest mainland. The first system is associated with a
weakening low pressure system moving inland and will continue to
spread rain showers and gusty winds along the Southwest coast
through tonight. The bulk of the moisture and precipitation
associated with this system will be concentrated over Bristol Bay
and the AKPEN. The shower activity will taper off and winds will
also subside late tonight as the low further weakens and the
tightening pressure gradient relaxes. After a brief break, the
second system will be a frontal boundary associated with a deep
low in the eastern Bering. This will bring another round of rain
showers beginning Tuesday through Thursday morning.

The third system will follow on its heels, taking a similar track
and continue with more rain showers for the rest of Thursday.
Rain/snow mix is also possible at times with the aforementioned
two systems as cold air advection trails behind the low across the
Y-K Delta and Lower Kuskokwim Valley, though little to no
accumulation is expected. Additionally, upper level waves embedded
in the cold, northerly flow over the relatively warm waters will
help generate widespread, convective rain showers offshore.
Daytime temperatures over the next couple of days will range
anywhere in the low 30s to upper 40s with overnight lows in the
low 20s over the interior valleys, and low to mid 30s along the
coast.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Thursday afternoon)...

There are two main synoptic features that will dominate across
the forecast area for the week ahead. The first synoptic feature
is currently underway as a vigorous shortwave trough and deep low
is moving into the western Bering. The leading frontal boundary
will bring moderate to heavy rain, gale force winds, and high seas
along the the western and central Aleutian waters and to the
southern Bering Sea through Tuesday tonight. Winds are expected to
lower to small crafts and continue to funneling through the gaps
and passes with decreasing waves through Wednesday as the low
weakens and moves into Bristol Bay. Scattered showers will
continue in the eastern Aleutians and the Pribilofs before
tapering off by late Wednesday night. The second synoptic feature
will be another vigorous shortwave trough and a well developed low
tracking south from the Kamchatka Peninsula beginning on
Wednesday. In addition to cold air advection accompanying with
this system, the associated frontal boundary will bring another
round of rain, wind, and high seas across the Bering and the
Aleutians for much of the week.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Thursday through Saturday)...

Gulf of Alaska: A low over the North Gulf Coast spreads westerly
gale force winds across the Gulf through Thursday afternoon. A
second low crosses over the Alaska Peninsula Thursday evening and
enters the Gulf by Friday. This low spreads high-end westerly
gales, with areas of storm force winds, south of the Aleutians and
across the western Gulf through Thursday. The winds diminish to
northwesterly gales across the western Gulf and easterly gales
along the North Gulf Coast through Friday night. Seas to 16 feet
in the central Gulf, subsiding Friday.

Bering Sea: Widespread high-end gales across the entire Bering
and south of the Aleutians, with areas of storm force winds,
through Thursday. Seas to 21 feet in the southern Bering and along
the southern Aleutians, subsiding Friday. A well-developed, wind-
wrapped low reaches the western Aleutians Friday morning and
spreads storm force winds across the western Aleutians and in
areas across the Bering from Friday night through Saturday
morning. Seas to 19 feet west of the Aleutians for Saturday
morning.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Friday through Monday)...

The extended timeframe continues to mostly feature unusually
decent model agreement from the end of this week through early
next week. Longwave troughing and below average 500 mb heights are
likely to stay anchored over mainland Alaska, with a prevailing
storm track and upper jet remaining well to the south and west
near the Aleutians/Gulf. This south-shifted low track should keep
the pattern fairly mundane and dry over most of Southcentral and
Southwest, with the more active and impactful conditions likely to
remain over marine areas of the Bering/Gulf, and over parts of
the Aleutian Chain and AKPen at times.

On Friday, an occluded and weakening low is projected to be over
or just east of Kodiak Island, with a relatively cold air mass
spilling in out of the north over much of Southwest and the
eastern Bering off to the west of the Gulf low. The brisk north to
northwest flow and cold advection will drive gusty (but not
particularly strong) gap winds along the AKPen until Friday
evening as a shortwave ridge moves into place and the pressure
gradient weakens. Meanwhile, the main player for the rest of the
extended range will enter the western Bering as a gale to possibly
storm force low by early Saturday morning, with its front
extending well out ahead across the Aleutians and central Bering.
The front will bring a period of moderate rainfall and southeast
winds to the Pribilofs and along most of the Aleutian Chain on
Saturday, with intense westerly winds potentially up to storm
force spreading across the Western Aleutians south of the parent
low center by Saturday afternoon.

By Sunday, a new low will likely form somewhere along the Bering
low’s front in the western Gulf and quickly transition to the
dominant center as it quickly deepens and moves slowly east. Some
more noticeable model disagreement does pick up by this point,
with some uncertainty for how far north the low will track as it
drifts into the Gulf on Sunday and Monday. That said, the general
consensus remains at the large scale, with an amplifying ridge
moving over the Bering as the large, closed low remains over the
Gulf. Strong northerly flow will develop between these two
features, supporting potentially quite intense gap winds along and
just south of the Eastern Aleutians and AKPen from late Sunday to
Monday. A barrier jet will also likely materialize along the
low’s front, pushing into the north Gulf Coast at some point on
Monday. Any other impacts farther north over the southern mainland
will be highly dependent on the low’s track, which again
remains somewhat more uncertain for the current outlook.
