Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Springfield MO 212 PM CDT Sun May 17 2020 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday) Issued at 130 PM CDT Sun May 17 2020 A sfc cold front from near STL to UNO will shift east. Some showers and maybe an isolated tstm will be possible as the front exits our eastern counties through mid afternoon. The heavy rain is over but flooding in areas mostly south of I-44 and east of MO Hwy 65 will continue into Monday while gradually subsiding as the water drains off the MO Ozark Plateau. A developing omega block over the CONUS will take shape for much of the week. An upper level cutoff low over IA will drift slowly southeast into sw IL by late tomorrow. Lower clouds will rotate around the vertically stacked low with cloudy weather sticking around for Monday. We have some low rain chances in the forecast for sprinkles/drizzle Monday, especially over our northeast Lake of the Ozarks counties. It won't be a wash out, but it won't be picture perfect weather either. Periods of clouds/cool. .LONG TERM...(Monday Night through Sunday) Issued at 130 PM CDT Sun May 17 2020 The persistent upper level blocking pattern will continue, gradually trying to break down or shift eastward toward the weekend. A persistent upper low just off to our east over the OH and TN Valley region will keep the cyclonic flow aloft over MO through Wed and can see periods of clouds, sprinkles, and cool temperatures sticking around awhile. Temperatures will gradually moderate by the end of the week as the upper low weakens and shifts east and upper level ridging moves over the area. Global models increase moisture and have some increase in showers/storms as early as Friday. With the upper ridge expected to be in place, coverage should initially be limited and diurnally driven Fri/Sat. By day 7/Sunday, the ridge axis starts to shift off to the east with better chances for showers/thunderstorms. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon) Issued at 1242 PM CDT Sun May 17 2020 KSGF/KJLN/KBBG tafs: Low pressure over IA will shift very slowly southeast into IL by the end of the period. Clouds will rotate around the low with periods of VFR and MVFR ceilings during the period. There is some potential for IFR ceilings toward 12z-15z and will need to monitor.
