Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A southerly flow pattern aloft will develop today and will
continue into the weekend. This will cause well above normal
temperatures across much of the area that will continue into the
weekend. Periods of moderate to strong Chinook winds are expected
over the next few days across the Alaska Range, along with breezy
east to northeasterly winds across the rest of the forecast area.

.DISCUSSION...
The 00 UTC model suite generally initialized well when compared
to observations. The models are depicting the same general
synoptic scale pattern through the weekend.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a high amplitude ridge will continue to build
over the Interior today as a 517 dam low moves northward
in the Gulf of Alaska. This low will move into Bristol Bay this
evening, and will move north to near Nunivak Island overnight. A
second low will move north into the southeastern Bering Sea on
Friday, merging with the one that is in place. A trough will
persist over the Bering Sea into the weekend. Mainly southerly
flow is expected to persist over the Interior into the weekend. By
this afternoon, H850 temperatures over the Interior will rise
into the 5 to 10 Celsius range, with warm H850 expected to
continue into the weekend.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Winds, along with warmer temperatures will be the big story
across the Interior for the next few days. Breezy east to
northeasterly winds are expected to develop today as a front moves
north across the Interior, with gusty winds continuing into the
weekend. The strongest winds today will be in the Tanana Valley,
especially near Delta Junction, as well as the higher terrain
north of Livengood. We opted to issue a Wind Advisory for today
for zone 219 for easterly winds with gusts to 40 mph along the
Dalton highway. This afternoon, the pressure gradient across the
Alaska Range will tighten up resulting in strong, southerly gap
wind developing. Wind Advisories have been posted for the Alaska
Range beginning this afternoon for gusts up to 65 mph. Winds will
diminish Thursday afternoon. Another, likely stronger, round of
gap winds is expected Friday afternoon into Saturday as the
gradient across the range tightens up again. With the second round
of gap winds in the Alaska Range we are currently anticipating
wind gusts in excess of 70 mph. A front moving to the north will
bring chances for rain to areas north of Fairbanks this evening
into early Thursday. After this front moves through, mostly dry
conditions are expected through the weekend. Southerly flow aloft
bring well above normal temperatures into the weekend. On
Thursday and Friday many locations in the southern Interior will
see temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Stratus and fog will persist along the coast today. A weather
front moving to the north will bring a mixture of rain and snow
to the North Slope and the Brooks Range on Thursday. Strong
easterly winds are expected to develop along the Arctic Coast this
evening. Winds will dissipate on Thursday evening as the front
pushes north of the coast. Another round of breezy easterly winds
is expected along the coast on Friday. Strong, southerly gap winds
are expected to develop in the Brooks Range on Friday and will
continue into Saturday. A warming trend in temperatures is
expected through the end of the week.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A low in the Gulf of Alaska will move towards the Alaska
Peninsula today. This system will spin a front northward,
bringing breezy northeasterly winds to the West Coast and the
Western Interior. This front will bring chances for rainfall as it
moves north across the area today into early Thursday. The low
will track to the north in the Bering Sea on Thursday, stalling
near Nunivak Island on Thursday afternoon. Breezy southeasterly
winds will develop along the coast south of the Bering Strait on
Thursday as the low moves to the north. Another low looks to move
from the Gulf of Alaska into Bristol Bay on Friday. The low will
continue to track north in the Bering on Saturday. Light rainfall
is expected at times through the weekend as the lows move north
through the Bering.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
