.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 331 AM CDT Tue Mar 12 2019

07Z water vapor imagery shows a closed low moving across the Baja of
California with a good fetch of mid level moisture streaming into
the southern and central plains. Another shortwave was noted just
off the Pacific Northwest Coast moving east. At the surface, ridging
over the MS river valley has gradually been weakening while a lee
trough of low pressure has started to deepen over the past couple
hours. 88D profiler data at 925MB and 850MB shows winds becoming
more southerly and an indication of the warm air advection pattern
strengthening. Just in the last couple hours, the higher surface
dewpoints in the 50s have started to surge north through western
OK.

For today and tonight, I expect there to be periods of showers and
perhaps some thunder. I don't think rain will be continuous as
isentropic charts show the upglide to be variable through tonight.
So the predictability of timing when precip will be at a specific
locations is low. The models appear to shows a scenario where there
is the initial surge of moisture this morning with a break in the
afternoon. There is some potential for a lead shortwave to lift out
this evening and isentropic surfaces show renewed upglide around 00Z.
Then the upper wave begins to lift out towards 12Z which should
bring a third wave of precipitation. Have tried to tailor the POP
forecast to fit this idea, but the overall expectation is for off
and on showers through tonight. There is a fair amount of uncertainty
in the QPF progs from the models. The 00Z NAM has quite a bit more
QPF during the late afternoon and evening than other solutions. This
may be a result of it depicting a more obvious lead shortwave and
enhanced vertical motion. For now have used a blend of model
solutions and the forecast from the WPC. This gives a general 0.5 to
0.75 inches for east central and northeast KS through tonight. I
don't plan to make any changes to the flood watch at this time.
Rivers across east central KS did not get as much moisture from snow
melt over the last several days and should be able to accommodate
the expected QPF. Meanwhile several river points across north
central KS are already above action stage or approaching flood stage
even before the rain has begun. So confidence in the flood watch
is good. For the most part, many forecasts have only minor
flooding but moderate flooding is not off the table depending on
where the heavier rainfall occurs after tonight. As for
instability, there have already been a few lightning strikes
across southeast and central KS. Mid level lapse rates are
expected to be around 6 C/km and upper difluence is only expected
to improve overnight. So forecast soundings are showing some
modest elevated CAPE near 100 J/kg. I don't think there will be
any discrete storms given the magnitude of forcing. So severe
potential remains very low. With the persistent warm air advection
today, have increased highs a degree or two even though there
shouldn't be much sunshine. With current temps still hanging out
in the 40s for many areas, it shouldn't take to much to warm into
the lower and middle 50s. For the same reasoning of persisting
warm air advection, lows tonight should be very mild with temps
holding steady in the lower 50s.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

The main focus in the extended portion of the forecast is the strong
storm system set to bring heavy rain and very strong winds to the
area tomorrow.

By 12Z tomorrow the center of a strengthening surface low will be
located over the foothill region of eastern CO. A batch of heavy
rain and thunderstorms will likely be ongoing from southern TX
through southern NE, impacting portions of the western and southern
CWA. Abundant moisture combined with sufficient large scale
ascent ahead of the system will allow heavy rain with a few
embedded thunderstorms to continue to spread north and eastward
across the entire forecast area through the morning hours. The
heaviest rain is expected to occur over the northeastern quadrant
of KS between 12Z and 18Z. Current forecast quantitative
precipitation amounts during that timeframe range from
approximately 0.50 to 0.60 inches area wide. Rain will begin
tapering off during the afternoon. Total QPF amounts from rain
expected today and tomorrow range from 1.0 to 1.5 inches across
northeastern KS. Flooding of area streams and rivers in response
to continued snow melt and heavy rain will continue to be a
concern, especially in north-central KS.

The center of the surface low will push into western KS during the
afternoon. The GFS is currently forecasting the center barometric
surface pressure to drop to as low as 971 mb, while other models are
a little higher. Either way, this will be a very strong system.
Given the strong nature of the system, isobars will be packed very
tightly together around the low, resulting in very windy conditions
tomorrow afternoon and especially Thursday afternoon as the system
departs to the northeast. Southerly winds tomorrow afternoon are
expected to be sustained between 20 and 30 mph with gusts as high as
35 or 40 mph. Thursday afternoon, west to northwest winds could be
sustained between 25 and 35 mph with gusts as high as 40 or 45 mph
possible. The strongest of those winds look to occur in north-
central KS where winds could be sustained at 40 mph for a few hours,
prompting a High Wind Watch. The High Wind Watch will be in effect
from 12Z Thursday to 00Z Friday.

Cooler air will wrap into the area by Friday as a surface ridge
moves over the region. Highs should be in the low 40s Friday
afternoon. The surface ridge will slide SE during the weekend with
winds turning back to a southerly direction and increasing temps.
Conditions should remain dry through the weekend.

This hazardous weather outlook is for east central...north
central and northeast Kansas.

There is a chance for a few thunderstorms today and tonight.
