.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)
Issued at 331 PM CDT Tue Mar 12 2019

Tonight through Wednesday, an intense upper level low across the
northern Baja Peninsula, early this afternoon and will lift
northeast across the Desert Southwest into northwest KS by 00Z FRI.
An upstream H5 trough will dig east-southeast and phase with the
upper low as it translates northeast across northern NM into
southeast CO. Richer GOM moisture will be advected northward across
TX into KS as a lee surface cyclone deepens across eastern CO through
the night. The richer moisture advection northward will continue to
cause periods of showers and perhaps a few elevated thunderstorms
through the night. As the amplifying upper trough lifts northeast
across northeast NM into southeast CO by 12Z this morning, the
DCVA will increase along with a 100 KT mid-level jet max lifting
northward into eastern KS. The combination of richer moisture
return, strong DCVA and being under the left exit region of the H5
jet will cause widespread moderate rainfall across eastern KS
from 12Z through 18Z. The band of stronger ascent will shift east
of the CWA along with the more moderate rainfall by 18Z WED.
There may also be some elevated thunderstorms within the band of
heavier rainfall during the morning hours. As the upper low shift
northeast into northwest KS, a 700mb dry slot will translate
northeast across eastern KS. The heavier rainfall Thursday
afternoon will give most areas an additional half inch of rainfall
during the morning hours of Wednesday.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday)

Wednesday afternoon the cloud cover will decrease across central and
north central KS. There should be sufficient low-level moisture with
dewpoints in the lower 50s, along with steeper low-mid level lapse
rates for 500-800 J/KG of MLCAPE developing across north central and
northeast KS, to the east and northeast of a deepening surface low
across west central KS. If surface based thunderstorms are able to
develop in the warm sector ahead of an advancing Pacific cold front
across north central KS, a few could become strong to severe given 0-
6KM shear of 30 to 50 KTS. Most models show looping hodographs with
good veering of winds with height, especially across north central
KS where surface winds will be backed more to the southeast. The
forecast hodographs would provide any updraft that can withstand the
stronger vertical windshear, stream-wise horizontal vorticity, which
would be tilted and stretched causing negative pressure
perturbation, which would intensify the updraft. These low-top
supercells may produce severe hail, damaging wind gust and perhaps
a tornado, given the strong low-level vertical shear profile
across the northwest and north central counties of the CWA
Wednesday afternoon. However, if the cloud cover does not clear
the instability will be too low for thunderstorm formation. There
is a potential that developing updrafts may not survive the
stronger vertical windshear. Therefore, storm may not even develop
across north central KS in the afternoon hours. After 00Z, the
sfc temperatures will cool and any strong to severe thunderstorms
that were able to develop will weaken.

Southerly winds in the warm sector along with some insolation during
the afternoon will cause temperatures to warm into the lower to mid
60s across the CWA. South-southeast winds across the CWA will be
strong with 25 to 35 MPH winds across the CWA that may gust to 45
MPH at times. I have issued a wind advisory for the entire area
starting at 16Z WED and lasting through 00Z THU.

Wednesday night through Thursday, The deep surface low across west
central KS will move northeast and be nearly vertically stacked with
the upper low as it moves into southeast NE by 12Z THU, and then
into northeast IA by 00Z FRI. We may see some wrap around showers
Wednesday night through Thursday. The winds will switch to the
northwest as a cold front pushes southeast across the CWA during the
morning hours of Thursday. Due to the tight pressure gradient
betweeen the 980mb low moving northeast across southeast NE into IA,
the northwest winds will increase to 25 to 35 MPH with gusts of 40
to 45 MPH. North central KS may see some 50 to 55 MPH wind gusts
during the mid morning through the early afternoon hours of Thursday
before winds begin to diminish by late afternoon. I kept the high
wind watch in effect for Republic, Cloud and Ottawa Counties on
Thursday. The remainder of the area will probably need a wind
advisory on Thursday. The low-level CAA will keep temperatures in
the upper 30s to mid 40s.

Thursday night through Monday. The deep upper trough across the
northeast US will gradually fill and shift northeast into the
western Atlantic. The northwest upper flow across the plains will
gradually become more zonal. Look for a gradual warming trend
with 40s on Friday and 50s through the weekend.

Monday night and Tuesday, A low amplitude upper trough will move
east across the plains and bring a chance for showers Monday
afternoon into Tuesday. Some of the rain showers may mix with or
change to snow showers late Monday night as colder air advects
southeast across the CWA. Lows Tuesday will be in the lower to mid
30s and highs will probably rebound into the lower 50s on
Tuesday.

This hazardous weather outlook is for east central...north
central and northeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and tonight.

There is a chance for a few thunderstorms tonight. Locally
moderate rain is possible at times. Rain combined with melting
snow could cause streams and rivers across north central portions
of Kansas to flood. Thus, a flood watch will go into effect this
evening along and north of a line from Abilene to Seneca.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday.

Moderate to heavy rain is expected Wednesday morning, so the
flood watch will remain in effect until Wednesday evening.

Southerly winds are forecast to strengthen late Wednesday morning
to 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts as high as 45 miles per
hour.

Isolated thunderstorms may develop wednesday afternoon across
north central and northeast Kansas. Some storms may be strong to
severe. All hazards will be possible with any severe
thunderstorms.
