...HEAVY RAINFALL EXPECTED OVERNIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY...

.A Flash Flood Watch continues overnight and into Thursday for 
much of central and southern Minnesota. This watch includes those 
counties located along and north of a Windom-Owatonna line, and 
south of an Ortonville- Scandia line. Thunderstorms capable of 
heavy rainfall and flash flooding will spread across the rest of 
the watch area during the overnight hours. 

The heaviest rainfall is expected to fall during the overnight 
hours, but additional storms redeveloping Thursday afternoon will 
only exacerbate any flooding issues. Widespread rainfall amounts 
of 2 to 3 inches are expected by Friday evening across the watch 
area, with localized amounts of 3 to 5 inches possible in areas 
where the most stationary bands of thunderstorms set up.

Recent heavy rainfall has led to very moist soil conditions and
elevated streams and creeks across much of central and southern
Minnesota. The combination of high rainfall rates and wet soil
conditions could lead to rapid runoff and areas of flash
flooding.

southern Minnesota and move east into western Wisconsin by 
evening. 

A line of thunderstorms is expected to develop over central and

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Thursday)

Storms that came in from the Sioux Falls area overnight sped up
as it generated an MCV and encountered stronger steering flow from
the LLJ. This ended up limiting our flash flood potential and has
held rainfall totals south of the US-212 corridor to generally
the 1-2" range. We did get a streak of 2-3" from east of Fairmont
up to and through Mankato where a lead cell that moved to the
north out ahead of the main line.

For today, biggest change with the forecast was to shift
everything south. By 00z this evening, both the RAP and HRRR show
the warm front still down in northern IA, so agree with what we
saw from WPC in shifting the excessive rain outlook south. The
setup for tonight looks very similar to what we just saw last
night, so another round of heavy rainfall looks likely across
southern MN where we are basically getting the rain tonight. With
that said, probability matched QPF from the 00z HREF put the heavy
rain axis tonight from Redwood Falls over toward the Twin Cities,
which is similar to what the 6z HRRR shows. Still with the front
remaining farther south through the period, think the 11.00 NSSL-
WRF may be on to something with the heavy rain axis down on the
MN/IA border. Given the uncertainties on where this second round
of heavy rain sets up, have left any decisions on flash flood
watches to later shifts when there's hopefully more confidence on
where the band of heaviest rain will go tonight.

Expect a prolonged lull in precip in the wake of the MCV, so have
reduced PoPs quite a bit through the afternoon. Next round of
storms look to get going between 0z and 3z to the north of where
the warm front ends up. HREF is not overly optimistic on severe
potential today, likely due to shortwave ridging in the wake of
this mornings activity and our greater severe risk may have to
wait until tonight when better forcing and shear arrive. Though by
then we will be battling nocturnal destabilization, with severe
threat likely diminishing like we saw with the line of storms that
went across southern MN last night.

For Thursday, the fun continues. This probably looks like our best
severe threat day with a cold front advancing across the area, but
extensive showers and storms Wednesday night into Thursday morning
will limit the amount of destabilization we see. Current SPC Day 3
outlook looks good, though that will depend on timing of the cold
front.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Tuesday)

Big story in the long term is the return of summer for next week
as an anomalously strong ridge sets up across eastern NOAM.

Thursday evening will see the cold front sweep east across the
area and finally end the severe and heavy rain threat. Western WI
will have a continuation of severe/heavy rain threat through the
evening, but we will have a nice drying trend from west to east.

Friday, we did boost wind speeds above the NBM as we will see
deep mixing and strong winds develop in the afternoon in the wake
of the system moving through Thursday night. West winds gusting
30-40 mph still look likely much of Friday, along with temps
holding in the 60s. We will also see some wraparound precip build
down into central MN during the morning.

This weekend, flow becomes more zonal, but we will see a weak
wave swing through the northern Plains Sat/Sat night. We could see
storms develop along the cold front Saturday/Saturday night as
the GFS has, but the ECMWF bring this front through dry. Stayed
with the NBM pops at this point, which has highest PoPs in western
WI Saturday evening.

Next week, strong upper height anomalies build across the Great
Lakes. This will signal a return to summer-like heat and humidity.
We stayed with the NBM for temp forecasts next week, but this
looks to be conservative, with highs in the mid/upper 80s and 90
or two not out of the question, especially Tuesday/Wednesday. This
ridge will also keep us dry, for a few days anyways, with the
western trough not looking to head out into the Plains and bring
us precip chances until the end of next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday afternoon)

Weakening upper trough exiting to the east. Some residual FGEN
forcing over east central MN trailing into west central WI enough
to continue -ra a couple hours or so. IFR/MVFR cigs with next shot
of thunder/ra moving into mainly southwest MN after 02z or so.
Will time using the current HRRR which seems to have a decent
handle of overall expected development. Should lift to east
central MN by 08z and then exit into WI in the morning. CIGS look
to remain IFR much of Thu morning as well, ahead of surface cold
front.

KMSP...Residual shra exiting to the east early with next shot of
trsa moving in mainly after 08z. May have a break early Thu
morning before redevelopment by 17z-18z expected.
