Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service North Platte NE 350 AM CDT Thu Sep 12 2019 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday) Issued at 349 AM CDT Thu Sep 12 2019 Due to recent heavy rainfall the past two days, considerable Hydrologic concern remain across eastern portions of north central Nebraska for the foreseeable future. Numerous Flash Flood Warnings and Flood Advisories remain in effect. Refer to the latest statements for specific details. Additional details can be found in the Hydrology Section below. The upper trough and closed low will move across the Dakotas today. To the south across western Nebraska, Windy conditions will develop by mid morning and persist through late afternoon. The strongest winds from 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 40 mph will occur across north central Nebraska. Wraparound cloud cover is expected across northern Nebraska, mainly near and north of highway 20. A chance for showers as well mainly during the afternoon. Highs today will be considerably cooler, ranging from 65 at Gordon, 72 at O'Neill, and 75 at Imperial. For tonight, surface high pressure will settle over the area. with clear skies, lows will be quite cool ranging from near 45 across the west to near 50 east. On Friday, zonal flow aloft will setup across the region. This will push a warm front across the area. With sunny skies, highs to reach the upper 70s to around 80, coolest in Boyd and northern Holt county near 75. Winds will be west to southwest at 5 to 15 mph. .LONG TERM...(Friday night through Wednesday) Issued at 349 AM CDT Thu Sep 12 2019 A persistent period of dry weather is then forecast Saturday through Tuesday. Zonal flow aloft will persist until Monday, becoming southwest aloft as an upper trough digs into the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West through Tuesday. Highs return to the mid 80s Saturday, upper 80s to near 90 Sunday and Monday, then mid 80s Tuesday. As the upper trough in the West emerges onto the High Plains Tuesday night and Wednesday, a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms, mainly northwest Sandhills. Highs Wednesday forecast to lower slightly into the upper 70s to lower 80s. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday night) Issued at 1233 AM CDT Thu Sep 12 2019 An upper level system and cold front has moved through most of western Nebraska. Showers and thunderstorms will continue from KVTN through O'Neill through 09Z, ending thereafter. At KLBF, scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will continue until 08z. IFR ceilings are expected at KVTN until 15Z, then VFR. VFR conditions to persist at KLBF. Northwest winds behind the cold front will increase to about 30020G30KT from 15Z until 00Z Friday, quickly decoupling in the evening. && .HYDROLOGY... Issued at 349 AM CDT Thu Sep 12 2019 Hydrologic concerns remain high in the wake of the departing overnight system. MRMS radar precipitation estimates range from 1 inches to 3 inches across portions of Brown, Rock, Keya Paha, Boyd, and Holt County. The highest amounts reported by AWOS gages was 2.40 inches at Ainsworth and 2.00 inches at O'Neill. These counties also had even heavier rainfall the previous night with many areas receiving 2 to 4 inches with locally near 5 inches. Since this summer, the water table has remained very high and the Sandhills cannot absorb very much rainfall before runoff and possible Flooding/Flash Flooding begins. Numerous Flash Flood Warnings and Flood Advisories remain in effect across portions of these counties. Some areas roads have reported water over them. Refer to the latest statements for specific details for your area. Regarding rivers, the rainfall center fell between the Niobrara and Loup River Basins and within the Elkhorn River Basin. Significant runoff is ongoing from minor tributaries into these river basins. The Elkhorn river near Atkinson has just risen to 7.6 feet, which is above minor flood stage of 7.5 feet. A flood advisory remain in effect for areas including the Elkhorn River upstream and downstream of Atkinson. If further rises continue, an areal Flood Warning may be necessary. It is also possible that historic rainfall the past few days could push the Elkhorn River downstream through Ewing to above flood stage as well.
