The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton has issued a Storm
Warning, which is in effect from 3 PM this afternoon to 11 PM EST
this evening. A Heavy Freezing Spray Warning has also been
issued. This Heavy Freezing Spray Warning is in effect from 10 PM
this evening to 9 AM EST Thursday. The Gale Warning is no longer
in effect.

* WINDS AND SEAS...West winds 20 to 30 kt with gusts up to 50 
  kt. Seas 3 to 5 feet.

* FREEZING SPRAY...Heavy Freezing spray expected late tonight into
  Thursday morning.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Storm Warning means winds of 48 to 63 knots are imminent or
occurring. Recreational boaters should remain in port, or take
shelter until winds and waves subside. Commercial vessels should
prepare for very strong winds and dangerous sea conditions, and
consider remaining in port or taking shelter in port until winds
and waves subside.

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will bring rain and snow to the region very late
today and especially tonight. The heaviest snow accumulations
will be across the interior high terrain of Massachusetts and
particularly along the east slopes of the Berkshires. An arctic
cold front crosses the region late Wednesday into Wednesday
evening, likely bringing snow squalls followed by bitterly cold
temperatures Wednesday night into Friday morning. Milder
temperatures arrive this weekend with dry conditions as high
pressure builds across the northeast. A cold front may approach
early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 2 PM THIS AFTERNOON/...
1255 PM update...

Some light snow moving into western MA early this afternoon.
Steadier snow assocd with increasing lift from warm advection
and leading edge of a modest low level jet will likely hold off
until after 3 pm, and mainly be confined to the Berkshires.
Light snow may reach BOS-PVD corridor toward 6 pm. An inch or 2
accum is possible across the Berkshires by early evening.

High temperatures this afternoon will generally range from the
upper 20s to the middle 30s.

.SHORT TERM /2 PM THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH 6 AM WEDNESDAY/...
Highlights...

* Accumulating snow tonight mainly northwest of a Bos-Pvd-Hfd line

* Highest snow accumulations across the interior high terrain of
  MA and especially along the east slopes of the Berkshires

Details...

Given that the low pressure system will be tracking across
interior MA tonight...milder mid level air will be overspreading
the region. After perhaps a brief period of snow along and
southeast of a Bos-Pvd-Hfd line, mainly rain is expected. Accums
should generally be a dusting to mainly less than an inch in
most of these locales.

Further back into the interior...thermal profiles will be cold
enough for mainly snow to the northwest of a Westfield...to
Worcester...to Bedford MA line.  Given the track of the low
pressure system the stronger forcing/greater QPF will also be
across our western MA/northern CT zones.

Current thinking is the heaviest snowfall will be along the
east slopes of the Berkshires...where we will hoist Winter Storm
Warnings for 4 to 8 inches of snow. Across the rest of
western/central MA will go with Winter Weather Advisories for
snow accumulations of 1 to 5 inches. The higher of those amounts
will be across the higher terrain of interior northern MA.
Further south in northern CT...ptype will be more of an issue.
Accumulations in the lower elevations should not be much more
than an inch, but a few inches expected near the MA border in
the higher terrain of northern CT. We did opt to go with a
Winter Weather Advisory for Hartford county, primarily for the
far northwest portion of the area where 3 to 6 inches of snow
will be possible. It is possible later shifts may have to
consider expanding winter weather advisories into Tolland county
as well as far northeast MA, but confidence was not high enough
at this point.

The system is quite progressive and all the precipitation should
exit the region from west to east between 2 and 5 am.  Colder air
may result in areas that have changed to rain end as a brief period
of snow. Untreated roads may remain slippery though for the Wed
morning commute...mainly across interior southern New England.
Low temps by daybreak should mainly drop back into the 20s.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Overview...

Mid level cold pool/polar vortex will push across the Great
Lakes at mid week, then will rotate E-NE into Quebec by late
this week. Piece of this arctic air will sweep across New
England Wed night and Thu, with H5 heights dropping to 507 to
516 dam, then will slowly lift N as the vortex shifts to
Newfoundland and Labrador by the end of the work week. Large
surface high pressure builds SE out of central Canada, and will
shift across the northeast into the upcoming weekend.

As the vortex shifts to far NE Canada, H5 heights begin to
recover to around 530 to 534 dam on Friday as ridging builds
across the Plains states into Manitoba and Saskatchewan. and
will continue to rise through the weekend, allowing temps to
slowly but steadily rise to near normal levels as the northern
stream mid level steering pattern becomes nearly zonal.

A front may approach early next week along the storm track
sitting close to the U.S./Canadian border with weak waves moving
along it. Rather high uncertainty, however, due to timing and
track issues amongst the model suite.

Details...

Wednesday and Wednesday night...

Low pressure and associated cold front pushes offshore early
Wed, with precip briefly ending Wed morning. However, arctic
front heads eastward around the base of the mid level vortex Wed
afternoon. Piece of strong mid level energy also shifts E with
this front, as low level moisture works NE out of the Ohio
valley. So, could see bands of snow showers/snow squalls develop
as this front sweeps across. Also noting very strong low and
mid level jet associated with this front, with winds upwards to
50-70 kt as seen on NAM 12 km and 3 km models. With excellent
low level mixing in place, could see some very gusty winds push
across. Could see gusts up to 40-50 kt along the S coast, with
the best chance for highest gusts across Cape Cod and the
islands. Have issued High Wind Watch for these areas. May also
see gusts up to around 40 kt along the Mass Pike on the westerly
winds.

May see quick but light snow accumulations as the arctic front
passes, with the chance of up to 2 inches or so across the E
slopes of the Berkshires.

With the combined arctic airmass and gusty winds, may need Wind
Chill headlines mainly after midnight Wed night, especially
across the higher inland terrain with wind chill readings may
drop down to -20 to -25!

Thursday through Saturday night ...

Large high pressure builds SE across the lower Great Lakes and
Ohio valley late this week, bringing arctic cold airmass with
it. Noting H85 temps drop -23C to -25C Thu/Thu night, then
slowly rising Fri/Sat but remaining very cold. W winds will
remain somewhat gusty Thu into Thu night, so could see Wind
Chill headlines once again Thu night.

Should see mainly dry conditions as the large high builds across
the northeast. Temperatures will slowly moderate later Saturday
and Saturday night as mid level heights rise.

Sunday and Monday...

With the storm track near or N of the region, may see low
pressure pass N of the region, but a trailing cold front may
approach late Sun night or Mon. If it does, may see mixed precip
if it arrives during the pre-dawn hours on Monday, but should
change to rain with SW winds in place ahead of the approaching
front. Tough call due to wide model solution spread.

snow overspreads region, mainly after 21z. Leading edge of snow
reaching BOS-PVD toward 00z.

Tonight...Moderate confidence.
Widespread MVFR/IFR with areas of LIFR in rain and snow. Ptype
mainly snow N/W of BDL-ORH-BED with snow to rain S/E of this
line. Mainly rain along the coast. Precip ending 06-08z in
western New Eng and 08-10z in eastern New Eng followed by
improvement to VFR.

Wednesday...High confidence.
Mainly VFR, but sct snow showers and locally heavy snow squalls
may briefly lower conditions to IFR/LIFR mid/late afternoon.
Increasing west winds in the afternoon with gusts 30-40 kt
possible.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in trends.
Precip starts as snow or rain/snow mix by 00z then quickly
changes to rain by 02z. Rain ending 08-10z possibly as brief
snow showers. Little or no accum with temps above freezing.

KBDL Terminal...Moderate confidence.
A period of moderate snow this evening, with some mixing with
rain possible. Precip ending around 06z.
