.SYNOPSIS...
A strong Pacific cold front will continue to push through eastern
New Mexico, bringing strong west winds and causing the fog to
diminish. Strong west to northwest winds will develop along and just
east of the central mountain chain this evening, expanding through
the rest of eastern NM Saturday morning and lasting through the rest
of the day. Lighter breezy winds with very cold temperatures will
exist through western New Mexico to the Rio Grande Valley on
Saturday. Warmer weather is expected Sunday through Tuesday, then
another storm system will cross from the west during the middle of
the week with cooler temperatures and mix of rain and snow.

.DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...(NOW THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT)...
A very strong Pacific cold front has made its way through central NM
and is already losing some of its associated precipitation as it
moves into eastern NM. Frontogenetic forcing will quickly move
eastward out of NM tonight with strong westerly flow filling in
behind. This will limit most of the remnant precipitation tonight
into Saturday to orographically driven snow through the west facing
slopes of western and northern NM. As such, all winter highlights
will be dropped at 06Z tonight.

The final chapter of this epic Thanksgiving storm event will be
defined by strong and persistent westerly winds filling in through
central and eastern NM. The first round has already arrived to the
Sacramento Mtns and adjacent east slopes where Ruidoso is under a
High Wind Warning. Strong W to NW winds will reach the peaks and lee
of the Sangre de Cristo and Sandia Mountains starting this evening
where High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories will begin at 03Z. As
the upper low to our north redevelops and rapidly deepens to a 525mb
H5 low over western NE Saturday, strong winds will spread through
eastern NM where wind highlights will begin at 12Z. Most of Chaves
County looks to miss out on the stronger winds being protected within
the Pecos River Valley, but can't rule out windier conditions closer
to Mesa and Elkins. Breezy west to northwest winds will also exist
through western NM to the RGV where strong cold air advection will
keep highs 10-20F below normal in the upper 20s to 30s. We will
finally be able to call an end to the unsettled weather Saturday
night going into the long term period.

LONG TERM...(SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY)...
A ridge of high pressure will cross from the west with a warming
trend Sunday through Tuesday. Highs should peak Tuesday around normal
to as much as 10 degrees above normal.

An upper level low pressure system (ECMWF) or upper level trough
(GFS) will then pass eastward over NM with precipitation beginning
in the west Wednesday, and spreading as far east as the east slopes
of the central mountain chain Wednesday night and Thursday. Temperatures
at 700 mb should bottom out in the -2 to -4 C range early Thursday
morning, enabling the snow level to drop near 5000 feet before
rebounding near 7500 feet Thursday afternoon. This westerly upslope
flow event has the potential to produce a few to several inches of
snow in the mountains, but only a few inches of snow at lower
elevations west of the central mountain chain. If the GFS is correct,
breezy to windy conditions will also be possible with a Pacific cold
front crossing Wednesday night, and a back door cold front diving
southward through the eastern plains on Thursday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Precipitation will linger over north central, northwest and west
central areas tonight, but accumulations should mostly finish by mid
evening. Strong to very strong west winds will develop along and east
of the central mountain chain this evening and linger through
Saturday. Gusts to 60 mph are expected from the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains southeastward.

After drier, warmer and less windy weather with a passing ridge of
high pressure Sunday through Tuesday, another storm system will cross
from the west with colder temperatures, wind, and mainly west
slope precipitation Wednesday through Thursday.

18Z TAF CYCLE
MVFR/IFR cigs and vis to persist well into the afternoon with areas
of fg across eastern NM with low cigs through central NM and a
fropa bringing the next wave of -rasn into western NM this hour. The
fropa will progress in the RGV to KABQ and KSAF by 19Z-21Z bringing
vis reductions. This front will lose much of its associated
precipitation as it moves into the eastern plains this afternoon, but
a strong uptick in sw/wsw winds will follow at all TAF locations
lasting through the end of the TAF period. Vis and cigs are also
expected to improve through the night.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of north and central
New Mexico.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Another round of mountain snow across northern and western New
Mexico, valley rain, fog/ patchy freezing fog early this morning
across central New Mexico, and gusty winds are set to arrive today
with a Pacific cold front. Winds along and east of the central
mountain chain with gusts up to 65 mph will lead to hazardous travel
conditions. Moderate to heavy snow along the Interstate 40 corridor
will likely impact travel.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

Lingering snowfall over the northern mountains may cause slick road
conditions during the morning hours Saturday. Additionally, strong
winds will impact areas along and east of the central mountain chain
with gusts between 60 to 65 mph. Hazardous travel conditons and
isolated power outages can be expected.

Temperatures warm Sunday through Tuesday as a ridge builds over the
state, but a storm system mid-week could bring another round of high
elevation snow and valley rain across western and northern New
Mexico.
