Zones out shortly. && .PREV DISCUSSION...433 PM MST Thu Nov 28 2019... .AVIATION... 00Z TAF CYCLE A relative break in the precipitation will be substituted with areas of fg across eastern NM tonight to include KROW, KTCC, and KLVS. Enough moisture in the RGV may also allow for fg at KSAF to KABQ, but confidence isn't high enough to include anything lower than IFR vis at this time. Future amds may include further vis reductions depending on timing. A strong Pacific cold front will enter into western NM to KGUP and KFMN by 15Z with perhaps a short period of -ra before switching to -sn. MVFR/IFR vis and cigs will also accompany the fropa before clearer and windy conditions fill in behind toward the end of the TAF period. This Pacific front makes its way to KABQ to KSAF by 18Z-19Z, losing much of its associated precipitation as it moves into the eastern plains Friday afternoon. Strong winds will still fill in behind at all TAF locations. 24/RJH && .PREV DISCUSSION...300 PM MST Thu Nov 28 2019... .SYNOPSIS... After a relative break in the snow tonight, moderate to heavy snow arrives through western and northern New Mexico Friday. Another several inches to a foot is likely atop the western and northern high terrain. Many lower elevations of central and eastern NM will warm with not much in the way of additional snow expected. However, much drier and colder conditions move in behind Friday's cold front with strong winds making it feel colder. The strong winds strengthen through eastern New Mexico Saturday as the snow ends across much of the state. The weather finally begins to calm and warm up Sunday heading into next week. && .DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT... Most of the wintry precipitation has subsided across the forecast area as what is left of yesterday's sub-tropical disturbance has opened and become embedded into the overall southwest flow over New Mexico. Many areas along and south of I-40 have warmed to or above freezing with a steady rise in dewpoints as sub-tropical moisture continues to advect into the region. This will help keep overnight temperatures from falling back to below freezing along and south of I-40. The abundant moisture will also allow for the likely development of fog tonight. On top of the already slushy and slippery road conditions, low visibility will then become a concern on top of that. A Dense Fog Advisory may become necessary if visibility falls below 1/4SM, which right now would favor portions of the eastern plains. Lighter snow accumulations will continue over the northern mountains with the second round of wintry precipitation arriving into western New Mexico Friday morning. Thus, have elected to keep the Winter Storm Warnings going for the southwest and northern mountains through this second event. The core of this second deep Pacific low will be centered over northern NV Friday morning, however a strong vort-max will swing through AZ and into NM tomorrow morning with a strong 50-70kt 700mb south-to-north oriented jet moving into western NM by 15Z Fri. This will signal the onset of moderate to heavy snow through western NM to the continental divide, likely impacting travel along I-40. Some of these winds will reach the surface with the fropa and produce areas of blowing snow. This jet progresses eastward rather quickly washing over the Sacramento Mountains producing winds of 30-40mph with gusts upwards of 60-65mph. The bulk of the precipitation will be through the northern half of the state, so have elected to hoist a High Wind Warning for the Sacramento Mountains. Winter Wx Advisories have been laid out for the aforementioned western high terrain as well as the Upper RGV. Future shifts will have to assess the need to for adjacent Wind Advisories for Friday afternoon. Snow looks to end across most areas by midnight Friday night. However, the Pacific low redevelops and rapidly deepens to a 525-530 H5 low over NE by 12Z Sat. An accompanying deep 980mb sfc low also develops through northern NE tightening the pressure gradient into eastern NM and keeping winds strengthening heading into Saturday. So as the snow ends, the winds take over as the primary hazard heading into the long term period. 24/RJH LONG TERM...SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY... The second potent storm will be over the central plains Saturday, with most of the precipitation having ended. However, the storm will strengthen quickly, producing strong to high winds over much of eastern NM. Wind advisory and high wind warnings will likely be needed. The wind and chilly temperatures will combine to produce a cold day across the state. Sunday through Tuesday will be dry and milder as a ridge of high pressure builds over the area. It will feel much nicer after the recent chill. Extensive snow melt is expected at lower elevations. The next storm will slam into CA Wednesday, then quickly lift northeast. Valley rain and mountain snow will impact western and central NM Wednesday through Thursday along with cooler temperatures. 40/CHJ && .FIRE WEATHER... Widespread wetting precipitation expected again Friday into Friday night in the form of snow and rain. There will be moderate to heavy snow in the western and northern mountains with substantial snow accumulations. Although precipitation will taper off Saturday, temperatures will remain below normal. Very strong westerly winds will crank up Friday night and Saturday especially over the higher terrain and from the central mountain chain eastward as the second upper storm system leaves New Mexico and intensifies over the Great Plains. Warmer and drier Sunday into next Tuesday before another storm mid to late next week. Vent rates will improve some Friday and especially Saturday. Ice accumulations near a few hundredths of a inch are possible, particularly south of the Interstate 40 corridor. Precipitation will change to rain during the afternoon for many valley areas, as snow levels rise throughout the day. Given that temperatures will stay near to above freezing, some slick road conditions can be expected. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday The second of a series of winter storms will arrive Friday, mainly in the form of high elevation snow and valley rain. But, a changeover to all snow is expected Friday night as a strong Pacific cold front sweeps from west to east. Travel impacts may be possible along the Interstate 40 and 25 corridors. Lingering snow showers will continue over the northern mountains Saturday morning. Additionally, strong winds with gusts up to 50-55 mph will impact along and east of the central mountain chain, leading to potential power outages and hazardous travel conditions along major interstates. Temperatures warm Sunday- Tuesday as a ridge builds over the state. But, another storm system is on the horizon mid-week for high elevation snow and valley rain across western and northern New Mexico. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
