Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Dry conditions with seasonable highs and cold overnight
lows will prevail through the majority of the work week ahead.
Strong and gusty north winds will develop at the higher elevations
late tonight and continue through Tuesday morning. Temperatures
may fall below freezing, in the colder valleys late Monday night
into early Tuesday and again late Tuesday night into early
Wednesday. A chance of rain finally returns to the forecast by
next weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...As of 01:50 PM PST Sunday...Water vapor imagery
continues to show a disturbance digging into the Great Basin this
afternoon, with northerly flow aloft prevailing across Northern
California. A few high clouds associated with this system will
pass through the flow over the next 24 ours. However, the main
impact from this disturbance will be with the increasing pressure
gradients and another round of very cold and dry air to the
region.

As stated earlier, the primary concern for this forecast package
will be with the increasing offshore pressure gradients for
tonight through Tuesday. The 12z NAM12 is still showing 925 mb
winds ranging between 35 and 45 kts over Napa, Sonoma, and Santa
Cruz counties, even though the SFO to WMC gradient only peaks
just over 12 mbs. Our local WRF is similar with a few 50 kt values
over the highest peaks and ridges late tonight and again tomorrow
night. Therefore, expect winds to increase across the North Bays
Mountains late tonight, gradually spreading into the East Bay
Hills and Santa Cruz Mountains by morning. The models are
suggesting that the winds will weaken a bit during the day
tomorrow, but increase once again for Monday Night. At this point
in time, believe the ridges of Sonoma and Napa Counties will
likely see the strongest wind gusts tonight, but all the peaks and
ridge of the North Bay Mountains, East Bay Hills, the Diablo
Range, and the Santa Cruz Mountains will be under threat on News
Year Eve. Although the strongest winds will be over the higher
elevations, breezy conditions will be in the surrounding valleys.
Although these winds will help keep the atmosphere mixed during
the overnight hours, windchill factors will make it feel quite
chilly especially if you plan to be outside celebrating on New
Years Eve.

The other primary concern for this forecast package will be with
the potential for very cold overnight conditions developing once
again Tuesday night and Wednesday night after the winds weaken
once again. All of the 12z runs came in suggesting that this
airmass will likely be colder and drier than the other day.
Therefore, believe that in the wind-sheltered areas Monday night,
temperatures will rapidly drop off after sunset, with these areas
falling to or below the freezing mark. However, Tuesday night will
be down right chilly across the region as the winds weaken. In
fact, it may be colder than yesterday morning, with us needing to
post freezing warnings once again. Wednesday night will also be
very cold, but should be slightly warmer than the first night of
the new year.

Otherwise, expect day time highs to remain in seasonal ranges, as
high pressure builds back over the region for the majority of the
work week. The extended models are still showing a pattern shift
for late in the week, with a trough of low pressure taking aim at
Northern California. At this time, The 12z GFS and ECMWF both show
the rain starting sometime late Friday night into the day on
Saturday, but that is where the similarities end. The GFS is
slower moving this trough through the area, while the ECMWF shows
a quick moving system, followed closely by another for Sunday.
Either way, it looks like there is the potential for periods of
rain next weekend. Palmer

.AVIATION....As of 9:55 AM PST Sunday...Low level moisture ahead
of a dry frontal system brought low clouds and fog to the Bay Area
this morning. Some low clouds linger as of 18Z but should burn
off within an hour. Northerly winds will increase in the afternoon
and will really get going in the evening after the front and
upper trough axis move through mainly aloft. This will create LLWS
over SFO OAK STS and SJC.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR after 19Z. Light winds becoming onshore
to 20 kt gusting 25-28 kt after 23Z. LLWS after 10Z.

SFO Bridge Approach...SCT-BKN clouds lingering through 20Z.

Monterey Bay Terminals...Becoming VFR after 19Z. Question is
whether low clouds return tonight. With humidities running 15-40%
higher than the previous morning MVFR is forecast after 00Z. These
clouds are expected to clear early Monday morning as northerly
winds increase.

force gusts to the coastal waters.  Conditions will remain
elevated well into Monday before easing on  Tuesday. Local maximas

period swell will continue through  midweek.
