Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Dry conditions with seasonable highs and cool
overnight lows will prevail through the remainder of the weekend
and for the majority of the work week. Strong and gusty north
winds will develop for late Sunday night through Tuesday, over the
mountains. A chance of rain finally returns to the forecast
Friday and into Saturday.

.DISCUSSION...as of 01:50 PM PST Saturday...Water vapor imagery
continues to show a ridge of high pressure along the West Coast
this afternoon, with a system moving over the top of the ridge
and into British Columbia. High clouds associated with this system
continue to spill over the ridge as well and into our area. These
high clouds are having little if any impact on our warming, as
most locations have rebounded nicely after our chilly start to the
day. In fact, most locations are running within two degrees of
this time yesterday. Pressure gradients remain weak over the area,
and will start to see the return of an onshore breeze near the
coast this afternoon and into tonight. Models are hinting at the
return of some low clouds tonight. Given the onshore gradients,
think it is possible, but it should remain quite patchy in nature.
That being said, any low clouds should help moderate temperatures
a bit over those of this morning. Needless to say, it will still
be cold, but not quite as cold as this morning. Tomorrow will
likely be a repeat of today, with a few high clouds possible and
day time temperatures returning to seasonal ranges.

The real focus of this forecast cycle will be with the developing
wind event for late Sunday night through Tuesday morning, as the
system current moving into British Columbia dives across the Great
Basin and into the Desert Southwest. Models are indicating that
this will be a stronger wind event than the one we had earlier
this week, with offshore pressure gradients in excess of 14 mbs.
The 925 mb winds on the local wrf also increase to 35 to 45 kts
across Napa and Sonoma Counties, with winds remaining in the 30 to
40 kt range as far south as Santa Cruz County. These winds will
increase late Sunday night into Monday morning, and although they
may back off during the day some, expect these winds to increase
once again Monday night through Tuesday morning. At this time,
confidence is high that the North Bay Mountains, East Bay Hills,
the Diablo Range, and the Santa Cruz Mountains will see at least
Wind Advisory criteria, and believe that High Wind criteria is not
out of the question. Therefore, have issued a High Wind Watch for
late Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Besides these winds,
much drier air will filter back into the region once again as
well. Although these winds will help keep the overnight
temperatures up in comparison to where we were this morning, it
will still feel quite chilly for those venturing out on New Year's
Eve.

High pressure will build back across Northern California for
Tuesday through Thursday, resulting in more seasonal daytime
temperatures and cool overnight temperatures. Although overnight
temperatures will likely be warmer than what we saw this morning,
they will remain on the chilly side through the next week. Models
are hinting that this dominant ridge of high pressure will break
down from Friday into the weekend. At this point in time, there
are still some timing differences between the GFS, ECMWF, and
Canadian, but believe sometime Friday night and Saturday will be
the sweet spot for rain if the models continue to trend this way.

.AVIATION....As of 04:01 PM PST Saturday...For 00Z tafs. VFR will
continue through the day and into the early evening. Onshore flow
and low level moisture will return overnight causing a threat of
low level clouds to develop. STS will likely see some reduction in
vsby, but was not ready to claim a full drop into FG territory.
Hi-res models are showing OAK and SFO with some kind of low cloud
deck developing in the pre-dawn hours, but SJC is tucked in just
enough while LVK remains high and dry. Any low clouds that develop
will burn off within a couple hours of sunrise and a more typical
day will ensue. Generally VFR with moderate onshore flow.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR through the evening. Low clouds may develop
in the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, but will burn off in the hours
following sunrise. WNW moderate winds will develop by late morning
into early afternoon. A dry front will move through on NYE
bringing strong gusty winds and possible speed shear through the
day on Monday.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR into the evening hours. Low level
moisture and weak onshore flow will cause some low level clouds to
develop overnight in the pre-dawn hours. Clouds will burn off in
the hours following sunrise. Late morning into early afternoon
onshore flow will be more typical with moderate to fresh winds.

.BEACHES...as of 02:50 AM PST Saturday...A beach hazard statement
has been issued today for long period forerunners. Latest model
guidance brings a NW swell of 18-20 sec this morning through
tonight with a height of 2-5 feet. It won't be a perfect beach
day (chilly), but the sun will be out which may attract beach
goers. Biggest threat will be sneaker waves. BHS has been issued
for shortly before sunrise and shortly after sunset.

.MARINE...as of 03:46 PM PST Saturday...Light to moderate winds
will continue today and tonight. Northerly winds will increase
across the waters tomorrow as high pressure  builds over the
eastern Pacific and low pressure deepens over the  Desert
Southwest. Gale force gusts will be possible across the  northern
outer waters Sunday night into Monday evening. Locally  stronger
winds are also forecast along the Big Sur Coast south of  Point
Sur tomorrow afternoon and evening. Light to moderate  northwest
swell will continue through much of the work week. The  longer
period northwest swell that arrived today will decrease in  period
tonight and tomorrow.
