.SYNOPSIS...Dry conditions with seasonable highs and cool
overnight lows will prevail through the remainder of the weekend
and for the majority of the work week ahead. Strong and gusty
north winds will develop at the higher elevations staring late
Sunday night and continue through Tuesday morning. Temperatures
may drop to freezing, or slightly below, in the colder valleys
late Monday night and early Tuesday, and again late Tuesday night
and early Wednesday. A chance of rain finally returns to the
forecast by next weekend.

.DISCUSSION...As of 9:05 PM PST Saturday...Surface dewpoints are
up to 15 degrees higher this evening compared to 24 hours ago due
to light onshore flow moistening up the boundary layer. GOES-17
satellite imagery shows areas of low clouds developing near the
coast. Low clouds and patchy fog will likely become more
widespread at the coast overnight, and develop locally inland by
daybreak Sunday. A forecast update was completed earlier this
evening to add patchy fog and increase low cloud cover overnight
and into Sunday morning. With this increased low level moisture,
temperatures tonight will not be as cold as last night. However,
the valleys farthest inland that will mostly remain isolated from
marine air influence, such as southern Monterey County and San
Benito County, will probably see temperatures drop to around
freezing by late tonight.
The intrusion of moderating marine air won't last long as another
round of dry and gusty north winds are expected to develop
starting late Sunday night. Current water vapor satellite imagery
shows a shortwave trough dropping southeast through British
Columbia. Models agree that this trough will continue tracking to
the southeast tonight, then dig due south on Sunday and settle
into the Great Basin by Sunday night. This system appears similar
to the one that ushered a cool and dry airmass into our region
this past Wednesday and Thursday, both in terms of the locally
strong and gusty higher elevation winds that it will generate
stating late Sunday night, and also in terms of the cold nighttime
temperatures that will follow the gusty winds as we start the New
Year.
Gusty northwest winds will develop along the immediate coast by
late Sunday afternoon and continue into Sunday evening. Winds will
then subside in coastal areas by late Sunday evening, but north
winds will then begin to increase in the hills, becoming locally
strong and gusty in the North and East Bay Hills by late Sunday
night and Monday morning. North to northeast winds will then
remain strong and gusty at the higher elevations through Monday
and Monday night, expanding into the higher elevations of the
Santa Cruz Mountains by late Monday and Monday night. This wind
event is expected to primarily be confined to the hills of the SF
Bay Area, with only moderate winds expected across higher
elevations of Monterey and San Benito Counties.
Sustained wind speeds in the hills of the SF Bay Area are forecast
to be in the 20 to 35 mph range from late Sunday night through
Tuesday morning, with gusts of 45 to 55 mph. Some of the higher
peaks such as Mount Saint Helena and Mt Diablo may see gusts as
high as 70 mph. A High Wind Watch is currently in effect for
elevations above 1000 feet in the North Bay Mountains, East Bay
Hills, and Santa Cruz Mountains from late Sunday night through
Tuesday morning. It's likely that this watch will be transitioned
to a Wind Advisory as we get closer to the event. However, if the
models trend much higher with winds, a High Wind Warning may be
needed, especially in the North Bay Mountains. This wind event
will primarily impact the hills and mountains, although locally
gusty winds will likely mix down to sea level during the day
Monday and into Monday evening, with localized gusts up to 30
mph. Winds will subside at the lower elevations by late Monday
night and then subside in the hills by midday Tuesday.
The cool and dry airmass arriving with the gusty north winds will
lead to a couple of cold nights during the first half of next
week. Some of the wind-sheltered valleys will likely drop to
around freezing by late Monday night and early New Year's morning.
Tuesday night is expected to be the coldest night when
temperatures may drop into the mid to upper 20s in our coldest
inland valleys. Freeze warnings may be needed for late Tuesday
night and Wednesday morning.
The longer range models agree that the blocking ridge over the
eastern Pacific will break down late next week, allowing Pacific
storms to reach California and bring rain chances to our area by
next weekend.

.AVIATION....As of 09:54 PM PST Saturday...For 06Z tafs. Onshore
flow this evening has begun to push low clouds into the Bay,
bringing in FEW decks to both OAK and SFO. This pattern will
continue through the night. At this point am not thinking it will
deck out much beyond SCT, but if RH's continue to go up we could
see a low broken deck. Either way, models are indicating clearing
time in the 16-18Z time frame. Models are keeping the low level
moisture low enough that it looks like there will be limited
impacts at STS and SJC, with none at LVK. If the layer deeps just
a hair, STS could find themselves in the soup. Kept a TEMPO group
in for them as a hint. Onshore flow will kick in tomorrow and push
back in low clouds again for tomorrow evening and night before
wind picks up and scours out the clouds later on Monday.
Vicinity of KSFO...Low clouds have crept in with a FEW deck and
may thicken up over the next few hours as westerly flow persists.
As stated above, clearing will be tough tomorrow and will be based
on how thick the deck develops. At this point it looks like around
16-17Z. The clouds will return Sunday evening as westerly flow
feeds plenty of moisture over the area. A dry front will move
through on NYE bringing strong gusty winds and possible speed
shear through the day on Monday. As a result, have begun the
process of hinting at the wind shear in the taf.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO, but slightly delayed in low
clouds onset tonight and earlier burn off Sunday morning.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR for now. Low level moisture and weak
onshore flow will cause some low level clouds to develop
overnight. Clouds will burn off in the hours following sunrise but
will return Sunday afternoon/evening. Late morning into early
afternoon onshore flow will be more typical with moderate to fresh
winds.

.BEACHES...as of 02:50 AM PST Saturday...A beach hazard statement
has been issued today for long period forerunners. Latest model
guidance brings a NW swell of 18-20 sec this morning through
tonight with a height of 2-5 feet. It won't be a perfect beach
day (chilly), but the sun will be out which may attract beach
goers. Biggest threat will be sneaker waves. BHS has been issued
for shortly before sunrise and shortly after sunset.

.MARINE...as of 09:43 PM PST Saturday...A potent dry system will
sweep across the coastal waters on Sunday with near gale to gale
conditions out of the north. Conditions will remain elevated well
into Monday before easing on Tuesday. Local maximas can be
expected around prominent points and headlands. Long to mid
period swell will continue through midweek.
