.SYNOPSIS...
A moist airmass will persist into Friday, with a couple of
rounds of thunderstorms crossing the region from the west in the
afternoon and evening. Slightly drier air will work in from the west
on Saturday, but with a brief return of moisture by late weekend.
Better drying will arrive behind a passing cold front in the early
to middle part of next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR THE MOUNTAINS AND NC FOOTHILLS REMAINS IN
EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING...
As of 10:30am EDT Thursday: Some scattered showers over the
mountains currently. Coverage of showers and the chances for
thunderstorms will increase through the afternoon. Showers will
generally be moving east-southeastward with the heaviest period from
2pm to 7pm this evening. Showers will be more scattered than recent
days, with average precipitation around a half inch, but areas which
are directly impacted by convection will see an inch or more in a
short period of time, which, combined with very wet surface
conditions, will continue the flash flood risk.
Temperatures will remain similar to recent days, with unseasonal
warm lows and humid afternoons with highs near to above normal, as
befits the tropical airmass.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 335 AM Thursday: The northern tier system over the Great lakes
will deepen early Friday and bring a fairly prominent shortwave
across the southern Appalachians Friday afternoon. Convection
developing southeast of the Ohio River Valley Friday morning should
make a run southeast and likely survive through at least the
southern Appalachians, if not the whole piedmont. Convection could
be rather strong as the cap will likely break by mid-afternoon and
mid-level flow will increase to 30+ kt. In addition, steep mid-level
lapse rates of 7 to 7.5 deg C/km should strengthen storms over the
Appalachians Friday afternoon and permit then to run well east
through evening. The Marginal risk from SPC for day 2 looks well
placed.
The primary vorticity lobe will move east of the piedmont by
Saturday, but a weak surface boundary will settle southward through
the region. A slight lull in the shower coverage is possible, but
still anticipate scattered shower and thunderstorm coverage Saturday
afternoon given the lingering moist boundary layer. Northern tier
temperatures may cool a category over Friday given the passing front.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 340 AM Thursday: A few weak embedded waves in the developing
northwest flow will follow through the late weekend and these could
drive a low pressure system from the mid MS valley toward the
southern Appalachians. In addition, warm sector instability will
bubble back up and likely be rather robust by Sunday afternoon.
Expect an associated uptick in PoPs through Sunday.
Deep layer northwesterly will get reestablished on Monday and
persist through mid-week. There is some potential for shortwave
energy to pivot around the New England low pressure system and reach
the southern Appalachians on Tuesday. However, any shortwaves moving
through the region aloft will be limited in both forcing and
moisture. A backdoor front will likely arrive sometime midweek.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Generally low cloud decks have kept many
stations at MVFR today, with some possible improvement as the
afternoon progresses. Thunderstorms this afternoon will move across
the area from the northwest to southeast through 2z. Storms will be
scattered, but some stations will have heavy rain, thunder, and
reduced visibility and ceilings as temporary conditions at times.
Included some fog overnight at KAVL, but most stations are not
expected to have problems as boundary layer moisture is gradually
declining. Another round of thunderstorms is possible Friday
afternoon which will begin to affect TAF sites around 18Z. These
storms will be occurring along and ahead of a front that will also
veer surface winds to be more southwesterly to westerly on Friday.
Outlook: Slightly drier air will filter into the area for the end of
the work week. However, scattered afternoon/evening showers and
thunderstorms, along with possible morning fog at a few locations
and/or low cigs are possible each day through early next week.

Cleveland, and moving southeast at 10 mph.

interior room.
Torrential rainfall may flood areas with poor drainage, such as
ditches and underpasses. Avoid these areas and do not cross flooded
roads. Water levels of small streams may also rise rapidly. Seek
higher ground if threatened by flood waters.
