.SYNOPSIS...
Lake effect snow will remain east of Lake Ontario through this
evening, then will weaken late tonight as high pressure briefly
shifts over our region. A more significant storm will move up the
Appalachians and into the Northeast on Wednesday, spreading more
snow across the region. Lake effect snow will return east of Lake
Ontario for the remainder of the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Lake effect snow east of Lake Ontario has become considerably
less organized, but still continues. Winds will continue to
diminish and the inland extent of the band will also. There may
be localized additional accumulation up to 2 inches late this
evening before the band completely falls apart or moves across
the lake.
A quick moving low pressure system will track northeast from the
Ohio valley through Pennsylvania on Wednesday. Snow will overspread
the area from southwest to northeast beginning late tonight. A
winter storm warning remains in effect for the majority of the cwa,
with the exception of far western New York which will be a bit
further away from the system. The warning is roughly in effect for
areas east of a Jamestown to Rochester line where storm totals are
expected to be in the 6 to 10 inch range. Expect 4 to 8 inches
to the northwest of this line, including the Niagara Frontier
and Buffalo metro area.
Models continue to be in good agreement with the evolution of this
system, with the central Plains wave and southern stream surface low
phasing with a northern stream PV anomaly across the eastern Great
Lakes/western NY. A bulk of the snow is expected to fall in the mid
morning to early afternoon hours, with a quick hitting amounts that
could approach inch per hour rates at times. Highs on Wednesday will
be in 20s.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
During the course of Wednesday night...the storm system responsible
for Wednesday's widespread snowfall will quickly eject northeastward
from the New England coast to the Canadian Maritimes...with ridging
and much drier air rapidly building into our region in its wake.
This will result in any lingering synoptically-driven snows quickly
coming to an end early in the evening...while also transitioning to
some nuisance-type lake snows southeast of the lakes as 850 mb temps
drop off to between -16C and -18C. Additional snowfall accumulations
in most areas Wednesday night should range from an inch or less in
most places...to 1-3 inches from northeastern Monroe to southern
Oswego county. Otherwise...the incoming colder airmass will drive
temperatures back down into the teens south of Lake Ontario...and
into the single digits across the North Country.
On Thursday...the center of surface high pressure will slowly build
eastward across the Ohio Valley...while a weak surface trough will
slide from Lake Superior into southern Quebec. Together...these two
features will induce a slow but steady backing of the low level flow
across our region...which will in turn force the nuisance lake snows to
migrate northward to areas east or even east-northeast of the lakes.
Off nearly frozen Lake Erie this will merely result in rather limited
snow showers migrating northward over time...while off Lake Ontario
the increasing fetch across the lake will help the lake snows to become
better organized while lifting northward to the Tug Hill Plateau...with
these potentially dropping several inches of fresh accumulation as they
make their way northward. Otherwise it will be a quiet and largely dry
day...with high temps ranging between the upper teens and mid 20s.
Thursday night the center of the surface ridge will slide eastward
along the Mason-Dixon line...while the aforementioned surface trough
will bodily slide eastward across Quebec Province. This will maintain
a general westerly to west-southwesterly flow of sufficiently cold
enough air for continued lake snows east and northeast of the lakes.
Off Lake Erie these should again be merely in the form of some limited
snow showers...while off Lake Ontario the combination of the relatively
long fetch across much of the lake...increased mid level moisture...
and a lake-induced EQLs climbing to between 8-9 kft should help to
generate a decent band of lake snows between the Tug Hill Plateau and
Watertown. Within this region at least several additional inches of
fresh accumulation will be likely...with headline-worthy amounts a
distinct possibility - a potential that will be highlighted in the
Hazardous Weather Outlook. Outside of the lake effect areas the bulk
of the night should be dry...with just a chance of some general snow
showers arriving late in advance of an elongating frontal boundary
extending eastward into the Ohio Valley/far southern Great Lakes.
Meanwhile...overnight lows will mostly range between 10 and 15.
On Friday...a general westerly flow of sufficiently cold air will
maintain at least some lake effect snows east of Lake Ontario through
at least the morning hours...while the aforementioned frontal boundary
will snake its way further eastward and bring some additional light
synoptic snows to the rest of the region. Have boosted PoPs for both
up into the high likely range...with temperatures otherwise expected
to remain at seasonably chilly levels in the mid to upper 20s.
Friday night the various guidance packages have come into better
agreement on keeping the frontal boundary in our vicinity...which
will keep at least a decent chance for some additional light snow
going right through the night. Temperature-wise...we can expect lows
to dip to around 10 above across the North Country...and into the mid
to upper teens south of Lake Ontario.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
On Saturday the lingering frontal boundary across our region will
temporarily weaken. This will lead to a somewhat reduced potential
for some scattered light snow showers through the day...for which
some lower-end chance PoPs will remain in play. Otherwise it will be
a generally quiet day...with modification of our previously cold
airmass allowing high temperatures to recover back into the lower
to mid 30s areawide.
Saturday night and Sunday our weather will then deteriorate again
as a moisture-laden area of low pressure tracks northeastward across
the mid-Atlantic and northeastern states...with notable differences
in its track/strength still persisting in the medium range guidance.
The eventual track of this low will be rather important to the forecast
as it appears likely that this system will drag a slug of warmer air
northward along with it...thereby raising potential issues with both
temps and ptype later Saturday night and Sunday...all of which has
been reflected in the forecast with a general snow/rain mix for now.
This system should quickly exit to our east Sunday night...with
high pressure and much drier air then building across our area for
the Monday-Tuesday time frame. This should result in mainly dry and
uneventful weather for the last couple days of this period...with
temperatures eventually rebounding into the upper 30s to mid 40s by
Tuesday as warmer air advects into our region.

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Localized MVFR/IFR conditions continue east of Lake Ontario in a
weakening band of Lake Effect Snow that will occasional impact KART
through about 09Z.
Otherwise, increasing moisture ahead of an approaching winter
storm is already bringing MVFR CIGS into JHW early this morning.
All TAF sites will deteriorate to IFR over the course of this
morning as widespread moderate to occasionally heavy snow
overspreads the region. The overall worst conditions will be
between roughly 12Z and 20Z, with a general improving trend from
west to east this afternoon and evening as snow tapers off to
more localized showers east of the lakes tonight.
Outlook...
Thursday...VFR, with local MVFR/IFR in lake effect -SHSN.
Friday...MVFR/IFR in -SN. Saturday...VFR-->IFR, as another system
moves in.
Sunday...Mainly IFR. Rain or snow likely.

Westerly winds will decease overnight as a weak area of high
pressure move across NY. The next low will quickly take shape near
the Ohio River Valley on Wednesday with easterly winds becoming
northwest and increasing by Wednesday evening. Winds shift to the
west on Thursday. Southerly winds return for Friday as high pressure
shifts east of the New England coast.
