.SYNOPSIS...
A widespread snow will transition to lake effect snow southeast of
Lake Ontario. Snow will move east of Lake Ontario through Friday.
Slightly below average temperatures will linger through Friday, with
another chance of light widespread snow Friday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Deepening low pressure is moving across the Appalachians this
afternoon. The precipitation shield extends across the entire
Northeast and Mid-Atlantic with widespread moderate to heavy snow
moving from west to east across the forecast area. The back edge of
the snow is evident on radar with visibility improving across the
Western NY. The Winter Weather Advisory has been dropped across the
Niagara Frontier and Southern Tier. A Winter Weather Warning remains
in effect as moderate to heavy snow continues to move across the
Finger Lakes and North Country. The surface low will continue to
move across central PA and into southern New England by this
evening. Winds will respond this afternoon and become northwest
across the region by evening.
Cold air advection will surge into the region tonight and the region
will transition from a winter storm to localized lake
effect/orographic snow showers. Snow showers are expected across the
higher elevations of the Southern Tier and Western Finger Lakes as
northwest winds tap into exiting moisture from the synoptic storm.
An additional 1-2 inches is expected across these areas tonight.
Northwest winds will also produce lake streamers across the lake
shore of Lake Ontario tonight. These scattered snow showers will be
produce brief periods of lower visibility and drop a dusting to an
inch into tonight.
Lake effect will begin to organize later tonight and into Thursday
as winds back further to the west and the long fetch of Lake Ontario
is realized. A lake effect band is expected to form along the
southern shore of Lake Ontario late tonight impacting Monroe, Wayne
and N Cayuga counties and will move northward into Oswego county
Thursday morning. The band will continue to move northward and set
up shop across the Tug Hill Plateau region Thursday-Thursday night.
As winds lock into place out of the west, the lake effect band will
intensify with Lake Induced EQL levels reaching 8-10k feet. The band
may wiggle some Thursday and Thursday night but it should lock into
place over the Tug Hill. A Lake Effect Warning is in effect for
eastern Lake Ontario from Thursday morning through Friday morning.
Total snowfall accumulations of 8-15 inches are expected with higher
amounts in the most persistent lake snows. The next synoptic system
will approach the region into into Friday morning and light snow
will move into Western NY.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Friday and Friday night, latest models seems to be converging
on a rather activity frontal zone extending along or close to
the southern New York state border. Current indications
suggesting a long duration snow event starting as early as
Friday morning and persisting through Friday night and perhaps
even into Saturday. Widespread accumulations during this period
look to be on the order of at least a few inches. The potential
is there for more significant snowfall accumulations, and will
need to monitor the incoming shortwave energy and resultant
downstream effects on the baroclinic zone closely for another
potential headline event.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
On Saturday the frontal zone responsible for Friday and Friday
night's widespread general snowfall will linger near or just south
of the New York-Pennsylvania border. Over the past couple of days
the various model packages have exhibited a considerable amount of
model-to-model and run-to-run inconsistency with exactly how active
this boundary will be during the day Saturday...and the latest 12Z/18Z
runs are no exception. Of these...the NAM/GFS keep the boundary less
active and only generate some spotty light precipitation at most...
while their Canadian/European counterparts still suggest a more active
boundary with most of the area likely picking up some additional light
measurable precipitation during the day. Given our existing continuity
of low likely PoPs and a desire to not flip-flop the forecast...for
now have maintained the likelihood of some light precip areawide on
Saturday...though whatever precip there is will likely be on the light
side (on the order of a tenth of an inch or less) and could well turn
out to be substantially lower in coverage than what is presently
indicated.
With regard to temperatures on Saturday...ongoing modification of
our previously colder airmass will allow daytime highs to recover
back into the 30s areawide...with readings ranging from the lower 30s
across the North Country and along the south shore of Lake Ontario to
the mid and upper 30s across interior portions of the Finger Lakes and
Southern Tier. Such a range in temperatures will impact ptype...with
primarily snow found across northern portions of the area...and rain
or a rain/snow mix found further to the south.
Saturday night and Sunday a moisture-laden area of low pressure will
track northeastward across the mid-Atlantic states and into New England...
while likely bringing another round of fairly widespread light precip
to our region in the process. With the guidance having come into better
agreement on a more southerly track to this system over the last 24
hours...it is starting to appear more likely that the potential influx
of warmer air aloft into our region Saturday night will be lessened.
In turn...this should help to keep precip type primarily in the form
of snow Saturday night...with the possible exception of right along
the NY/PA border where a little bit of a wintry mix still cannot be
totally ruled out. Modest diurnal warming of our airmass on Sunday
should then once again result in marginal temperatures for rain vs.
snow redeveloping across our area...thereby allowing for more of a
general light rain/snow mix once again.
After that...this system should quickly exit to our east Sunday night...
with high pressure and much drier air then building across our area
for the Monday-Tuesday time frame. This should result in mainly dry and
uneventful weather for both of these two days...with temperatures also
eventually rebounding into the upper 30s to mid 40s by Tuesday as
warmer air advects into our region out ahead of the next surface
low/cold front developing into the Central Great Lakes/Ontario
Province.
The aforementioned low will then pass by to our north Tuesday night
and Wednesday...while pushing its trailing cold front across our
region in the process. This will bring the next general chance for
some light rain and snow showers to our region...while somewhat
above average temperatures continue.

.AVIATION /22Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Snow is ending from west to east across the terminals this
afternoon. MVFR/VFR conditions expected across KBUF, KIAG and KJHW
and eventually KROC and KART by evening. Localized snow showers are
expected tonight especially at KJHW/KROC. Periods of IFR are
possible. Lake effect snow with localized IFR will redevelop
southeast of Lake Ontario overnight tonight and continue into
Thursday.
Outlook...
Friday...MVFR/IFR in -SN. Saturday...VFR-->IFR, as another system
moves in.
Sunday...Mainly IFR. Rain or snow likely.
Monday...Rain or snow likely.

Northwest will increase by this evening evening. Small craft
