Dry, cold conditions continue today. A storm system should
bring rain to the coast, and snow inland, Sunday into Monday
morning. Some uncertainty remains as to how far inland the
rain/snow line will track. Another storm system may bring more
rain and/or snow Wednesday. High pressure brings more dry and
cold weather Thursday and Friday.

Overall trend in the forecast remains on track for today. High
pressure remains to the south of the region allow for winds to
slacken a bit. Still enough mixing this afternoon for gusts to
near 20 MPH.
Previous Discussion...
A high pressure will move offshore through the Mid Atlantic
states later today. The main impact of this will be the backing
of surface winds through west to southwest this morning. Once
that happens, slight warm air advection will get underway. Given
the cold start to the day though, and plenty of sunshine, it
will still not be enough to push high temperatures out of the
20s at most locations in southern New England. A few locations
near the coast may approach 30 degrees

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
Southern New England gets squeezed between the departing high
pressure to the southeast, and a low pressure moving into the
Great Lakes late tonight. This will increase the SW winds, and
push warmer air our way, especially for Sunday. The warm air
advection will also mean increasing clouds tonight, and mainly
overcast skies Sunday.
These clouds will help prevent temperatures from falling much
tonight, but low temperatures will still be well below normal.
Most of tonight should remain dry, with an increasing chance of
some light snow late tonight into mid morning Sunday. Much of
our region should have little to no snow accumulation. The
greatest risk for precipitation will be during the afternoon and
evening, when temperatures should be well above freezing,
resulting in rain. The greatest risk for accumulating snow
beyond a coating would be towards NW MA.
Expecting gusty winds to develop Sunday as well due to an
increasing depth of the mixed layer as well as precipitation
drag.

Overview...
00z guidance is in general agreement for the long term. Broad
upper level trough will sharpen Sunday night pushing surface
low offshore. Zonal flow will set-up over the region as
anomalous ridge builds across the Pacific Ocean. This flow
will set-up a baroclinic zone across the Midwest into the
Northeast. Southern stream shortwave along the digging trough
will develop surface cyclogenesis over the southeast and push
along the spine of the Appalachian mountains. As this storm
exits towards the Maritimes on Thursday, high pressure will
settle into southern New England.

Sunday night...High confidence.
Southern New England should be in the warm sector by this point
as 925 mb temps warm above 0C. This is aided by the increasing
SW 925mb jet pushing in WAA into the area. The northern stream
low pressure system approaching from the west will continue to
move to the northeast bringing a swath of rainfall to the
region. At the same time, southern stream low pressure system
will develop a low across the southeast and push towards the
Gulf of Maine by early Monday morning. These two systems will
try to phase, but appears it will be to far north and east to
really impact the area.
Overall, any snow will transition to rain by Sunday night.
Cannot rule out heavy rainfall as PWAT values are nearing 2-3
STD above normal. These high PWATs combined with good 850
moisture flux and strong 925 LLJ may result in over an inch of
rain for some locations. Current thinking is higher amounts over
the Cape and Islands along the nose of the LLJ and increasing
moisture surge from southern stream system. Also cannot rule out
some higher amounts along the west side of the higher terrain
thanks to upslope from moist southwesterly flow.
Aside from snow, winds may be an issue. 925 mb jet increases to
40-60+ kts across the region. While lapse rates are poor,
especially with southerly winds coming off the waters, there
could be enough precip drag to bring some of these gusts to the

As the secondary low passes, cold air comes crashing back into
the region towards the morning hours. Any lingering precip
transition back to snow which could impact the Monday AM
commute, if there is enough moisture. Something to watch this
weekend.
Monday into Tuesday...High confidence.
Arctic front will push through the region Monday morning. In
fact, 850 mb temps will drop from 0C to -7C within a 3-6 hour
period. This will result in surface temps to remain steady
and/or drop through the day. Northwest winds will gusts during
the day thanks to strong mixing. Anticipate winds between 30-40
MPH as soundings show mixing above 925mb.
Less breezy but still dry on Tuesday as high pressure slides
offshore. While temps may still be chilly, it will feel a lot
better due to lack of wind.
Tuesday night into Wednesday...Moderate confidence.
High PWAT air advecting into the region ahead of the next
system. Southern stream wave develops surface cyclone across
the southeast and move towards southern New England. Still a
spread with this system, especially with the thermals and
location of baroclinic zone. The EC has trended cooler compared
to the warm GFS. UKMET appears to side closer to the EC.
Ensembles of the GEFS and the EPS continue to suggest an area of
snow esp north of the Pike. Still a lot of wiggle room with
this system as main shortwave is still in the Gulf of Alaska.
Overall high confidence that precipitation will occur late
Tuesday and into Wednesday. Just uncertain on if it will be rain
or snow. Right now locations north of the Pike may have the
best chance, but if system is less amplified than snow chances
increase.
Thursday and beyond...Moderate confidence.
Clouds will linger behind the passing storm system as upper
level trough axis lags a bit. High pressure will pass south of
the area during this period, but with zonal flow aloft, the
pattern remains active. Tight baroclinic zone across the Great
Lakes may drop southward resulting in an increase in weather for
Friday.
