.SYNOPSIS...
Dry, cold conditions continue today. A storm system should
bring rain to the coast, and snow inland, Sunday into Monday
morning. Some uncertainty remains as to how far inland the
rain/snow line will track. Another storm system may bring more
rain and/or snow Wednesday. High pressure brings more dry and
cold weather Thursday and Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Minor tweaks to the forecast for the rest of tonight, mainly to
temperatures. Winds continue to slowly diminish.

A high pressure will move offshore through the Mid Atlantic
states later today. The main impact of this will be the backing
of surface winds through west to southwest this morning. Once
that happens, slight warm air advection will get underway. Given
the cold start to the day though, and plenty of sunshine, it
will still not be enough to push high temperatures out of the
20s at most locations in southern New England. A few locations
near the coast may approach 30 degrees

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
Southern New England gets squeezed between the departing high
pressure to the southeast, and a low pressure moving into the
Great Lakes late tonight. This will increase the SW winds, and
push warmer air our way, especially for Sunday. The warm air
advection will also mean increasing clouds tonight, and mainly
overcast skies Sunday.

These clouds will help prevent temperatures from falling much
tonight, but low temperatures will still be well below normal.
Most of tonight should remain dry, with an increasing chance of
some light snow late tonight into mid morning Sunday. Much of
our region should have little to no snow accumulation. The
greatest risk for precipitation will be during the afternoon and
evening, when temperatures should be well above freezing,
resulting in rain. The greatest risk for accumulating snow
beyond a coating would be towards NW MA.

Expecting gusty winds to develop Sunday as well due to an
increasing depth of the mixed layer as well as precipitation
drag.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Big Picture...

Longwave scale shows a persistent ridge west/trough east
pattern through next week, although with slight drifting
westward over the period. Shortwave scale shows three
shortwaves moving through this flow during the period. A burst
of milder air leads each trough, and cold air moves in under the
troughs.

Model mass fields are in good agreement through Wednesday, but
with diverging details in the sea level pressure at that time.
Mass fields and thermal fields diverge somewhat Thursday and
Friday, mostly in timing of the features. Confidence is
moderate.

Details...

Sunday Night...

All models show a coastal low developing off the Carolinas
Sunday night and passing offshore near the benchmark. No sign of
cold air moving back in until after it passes. PW values
maximize at 0.75 inches over RI/Eastern Mass and 1 inch near or
just offshore of the Cape and Islands. This is 1.5 to 2.0 Std
Deviations above normal, suggesting a period of heavy rain
Sunday night.

Monday and Tuesday...

Cold front sweeps through by Monday morning. The low continues to
deepen as it moves off through the Maritimes. This tightens the
pressure gradient over New England. Mixed layer is forecast to
925 mb, with winds of 30 to 35 knots in the mixed layer. Thus
expecting a windy day. Temps aloft start the day supporting 40s
east and 30s west...but by mid afternoon this support is more
like 30s east and 20s west. So expect falling temperatures by
midday/afternoon.

High pressure builds over the region Monday night bringing fair
skies and light wind.

High pressure moves offshore by Tuesday, with southerly flow
returning. This will mean increasing clouds Tuesday, but
sufficient low level lift holds off until Tuesday night, so any
chance of precip should hold off until then.

Wednesday through Friday...

Low pressure moves up the Ohio Valley. Model consensus shows a
track across Northern New England Wednesday, but the GGEM does
favor a more southern track across RI and SE Mass. The consensus
track favors mostly rain. However the ECMWF hints at weak cold
air damming at the start, so we will not rule out precip
starting as snow before changing to rain. As with the Sunday
storm, far northwest Mass could hold onto enough cold air to
stay mostly snow.

High pressure brings dry seasonably cold weather for Thursday and
Friday.
