Dry but cold weather tonight as wind chills fall to zero to 10
below. Dry, cold conditions continue on Saturday. A storm system
should bring rain to the coast and snow inland Sunday into
Monday morning, but there is uncertainty as to how far inland
the rain- snow will track. Another storm system may bring more
rain and/or snow Wednesday. High pressure brings dry and cold
weather Thursday and Friday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SATURDAY MORNING/...
7 PM Update...
Gusty W-NW winds are slowly diminishing, but still gusting in
the 25-35 knot range this evening. Skies are mainly clear, but
with one cloud band sweeping southeast across Eastern MA and a
few patchy clouds near the Berkshires.
High pressure over the Midwest continues to build east, but with
an isallobaric high over our area and a stiff pressure gradient.
This will allow winds to remain breezy and gusty through at
least the first part of the night before diminishing.
No significant changes planned on the forecast at this time.
Previous discussion...
Will see the clouds across the region dissipate this evening,
though a few clouds may linger across the E slopes of the
Berkshires and across the outer Cape. Core of the coldest H85
air will cross New England overnight, dropping down to -19C to
-22C around midnight or so. Expect air temps to bottom out in
the single digits away from the coast, with readings down to
10-15 along the shore.
With winds continuing to stir overnight, will see wind chill
values down to around -10 or so, though a few spots across the
E slopes of the Berkshires may briefly drop to around -15 which
is close to Wind Chill Advisory criteria. However, this will be
brief so have opted not to put this advisory up at this time. It
will be a cold winter's night across the region.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Saturday...
As the H5 long wave trough pushes offshore Saturday morning,
W-NW wind flow aloft will remain in place as broad cutoff mid
level low pres sits N of Hudson Bay. Will continue to see cold
airmass across the region as large surface high pressure moves E
across the mid and lower Appalachians, reaching to Carolina
coast Saturday afternoon/evening. Will still see gusty NW
surface winds early Sat, then will diminish as the northern
extent of the ridge builds across through the rest of the day.
It will still be a cold day, though, as the core of the cold H85
temps sit across the region through the day. Expect highs only
in the 20s pretty much across the region, though could reach 30
along the immediate S coast and the islands.
Saturday night...
As winds begin to back to W-SW, will start to see some mid and
high clouds move in late Saturday. Then, with the SW wind in
place, warm air advection pattern sets up at the surface and
aloft Saturday night. Temps will fall back to the mid teens and
20s Sat evening, then will slowly rise through the remainder of
the night.
Noting a deformation zone trying to work eastward out of the
Great Lakes, along with weak low pressure signaled on several
model suite members. The question is whether this zone will push
far enough E and S to effect the region, mainly during the
overnight hours. Some model members also indicating that some
low level moisture may work up the coast, and may approach the S
coast toward daybreak. For now, have carried a dry forecast for
most of the region, but could see some light snow work into the
E slopes of the Berkshires work in after midnight.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Big Picture...
Longwave scale shows a persistent ridge west/trough east
pattern through next week, although with slight drifting
westward over the period. Shortwave scale shows three
shortwaves moving through this flow during the period. A burst
of milder air leads each trough, and cold air moves in under the
troughs.
Model mass fields are in good agreement through Wednesday, but
with diverging details in the sea level pressure at that time.
Mass fields and thermal fields diverge somewhat Thursday and
Friday, mostly in timing of the features. Confidence is
moderate.

Sunday...
Southwest flow aloft Sunday with surface flow turning from south. By
Sunday afternoon the surface pressure gradient increases, and the
right entrance region of the upper jet moves into position over
Southern New England. All of this becomes more favorable to generate
lift over the region, thus increased probability of precip through
the day. Mixed layer to 925 mb supports southwest gusts to 30 knots.
Temperature profiles show cold air in place Saturday night and
Sunday morning. But Atlantic high pressure is in control rather than
a Maritime high, so there is little to hold the cold air in. The
resulting south flow and warm advection should warm temps through
the day. While some light snow is possible at the start, expect most
areas to mix with or change to rain. PW values maximize at 0.75
inches over RI/Eastern Mass and 1 inch near or just offshore of the
Cape and Islands. This is 1.5 to 2.0 Std Deviations above normal,
suggesting a period of heavy rain Sunday night.
The best chance for snow holding together would be in Northwest
Mass, north/west of Springfield and Worcester. If all of the
moisture in northwest MA stays as snow, there is a potential for
up to 6 inches. Something close to this may happen in far
western Franklin County. Most areas will mix with at least some
rain, and that should hold snow values down. But it bears
watching.
All models show a coastal low developing off the Carolinas
Sunday night and passing offshore near the benchmark. No sign of
cold air moving back in until after it passes, but it could
further lift and support a period of heavy precipitation after
midnight.
Monday and Tuesday...
Cold front sweeps through by Monday morning. The low continues to
deepen as it moves off through the Maritimes. This tightens the
pressure gradient over New England. Mixed layer is forecast to
925 mb, with winds of 30 to 35 knots in the mixed layer. Thus
expecting a windy day. Temps aloft start the day supporting 40s
east and 30s west...but by mid afternoon this support is more
like 30s east and 20s west. So expect falling temperatures by
midday/afternoon.
High pressure builds over the region Monday night bringing fair
skies and light wind.
High pressure moves offshore by Tuesday, with southerly flow
returning. This will mean increasing clouds Tuesday, but
sufficient low level lift holds off until Tuesday night, so any
chance of precip should hold off until then.
Wednesday through Friday...
Low pressure moves up the Ohio Valley. Model consensus shows a
track across Northern New England Wednesday, but the GGEM does
favor a more southern track across RI and SE Mass. The consensus
track favors mostly rain. However the ECMWF hints at weak cold
air damming at the start, so we will not rule out precip
starting as snow before changing to rain. As with the Sunday
storm, far northwest Mass could hold onto enough cold air to
stay mostly snow.
High pressure brings dry seasonably cold weather for Thursday and
Friday.
