A front in the southwestern Gulf will move into the northeastern
Gulf this afternoon where it will persist through Sat morning. A 
low in the North Pacific will move to 300 nm southeast of Chignik 
at 953 mb Sat morning, then move to 85 nm northeast of Chignik at
952 mb Sat afternoon. The low will then move to the eastern 
Bering Sun morning.

A front in the southwestern Gulf will move into the northeastern
Gulf this afternoon where it will persist through Sat morning. A

at 953 mb Sat morning, then move to 85 nm northeast of Chignik at
952 mb Sat afternoon. The low will then move to the eastern 
Bering Sun morning.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A vertically stacked low spinning nearly stationary south of the
Eastern Aleutians is the anchor low within a very large cyclonic
circulation, which encompasses the North Pacific and Bering Sea.
The focus of the forecast is on the digging trough over the
Northeast Pacific, with cyclogenesis favorable on the leading
edge of the trough, approximately 600 miles south of the Alaska
Peninsula and Kodiak Island. With downstream height rises, any
low that does form will track northward toward the Alaska
Peninsula.

In the meantime, conditions are relatively quiet across much of
the region, from the Bering Sea to Southwest Alaska and inland
portions of Southcentral. A gale force front is lifting northward
along the north Gulf coast with another gale force front lifting
northward along the Eastern Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula and
approaching Kodiak Island. Precipitation is focused in these same
areas, while generally strong easterly low level flow keeps the
west sides of mountain ranges dry.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models continue to struggle mightily with development and
interaction of multiple lows in the aforementioned region of the
North Pacific south of the Alaska Peninsula. There is a fundamental
difference in solutions in whether the low forming tonight wraps
back into the existing low center (NAM/GFS) or maintains enough
spacing to become the new dominant low center (ECMWF/Canadian).
There is further uncertainty in whether there is additional
downstream cyclogenesis ahead of the new low. There is agreement
in a deeper low developing over the northeast Pacific Fri night
and driving northwestward to the Alaska Peninsula, though timing
differs by as much as 12 hours.

Early on favor hi-res models with existing fronts in the forecast
area, but quickly transition to more of an ECMWF solution Friday
and beyond with activity moving up from the Pacific. Do not
necessarily have confidence in this particular solution, but it
is closest to the current forecast and it seems prudent to
minimize changes with such large model spread. Also, despite all
of the model differences, the general trends reflected in the
current forecast through this weekend look pretty good.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Persistent low level cross-barrier flow will keep conditions
safely VFR through the taf period. The only forecast challenge is
whether low level wind shear will develop. With pressure gradients
supporting a fairly robust flow down the Inlet, the Turnagain Arm
jet will tend to bend southward and the depth of the surface
based northerly flow will be deeper. Have included low level wind
shear in the TAF, but it looks marginal for the first 2000 feet
and think any more significant shear will largely remain above
this level.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
General offshore flow will continue as a series of frontal systems
associated with a large upper level low south of the eastern
Aleutians lift north across the Gulf to stall along the northern
Gulf coast. The first of these fronts is currently over the
northern Gulf, while the second will track across Kodiak Island
and the Southwest Gulf overnight. This front will continue north
to the central gulf and over the Kenai Peninsula Friday to arrive
in the northern Gulf Friday afternoon or evening. The third front,
which looks to have the potential to be rather strong, though
details on the timing and track remain uncertain, will lift north
into the Gulf on Saturday. With all these systems, the
northeasterly offshore flow remains strong, which will keep the
bulk of precipitation confined to Gulf coastal areas and
surrounding mountains. Strong gusty gap winds will continue
through the typical channeled locations.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 2)...
Southwest Alaska will continue to be situated under a tight
east/west orientated pressure gradient as high pressure lies to
the east over the interior while a broad upper low lies to the
west over the Bering Sea. This will lead to unsettled weather
through the rest of the week and weekend as disturbances rotate
around the base of the upper trough and slam into the AK Pen. A
short wave trough will swing through the area overnight bringing
another round of heavy precipitation on windward slopes and strong
cross barrier flow, which will keep typical downslope areas
mostly dry, though some snow/rain showers can be expected near the
coast between Bristol Bay and Kuskokwim Bay. The area will see a
brief break Friday night before the next, stronger waves pushes in
from the south on Saturday. Strong easterly winds will accompany
this system which will further enhance downsloping, drying out the
valleys as well bumping temperatures into the 40's for some
locations.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 2)...
A broad upper level trough situated over the Bering will continue
to influence the weather in the area for the next couple of days.
A surface low located south of Dutch Harbor will slowly drift
east tonight and tomorrow bringing broad scale easterly winds to
most of the Bering/Aleutians. On Saturday a strong southerly jet
streak over the Western Gulf will support the redevelopment of a
strong surface low at the base of the broad upper level trough.
This low is expected to move over the eastern Aleutians/Bering
during the day on Saturday bringing gale force winds and heavy
precipitation to the area.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
Starting the long term portion of the forecast early Sunday puts
the main low in the Bristol Bay to Kuskokwim Bay region and
tracking toward St Lawrence Island. This will bring in the warmest
temperatures of this warm-up on Sunday over most of the area and
then a slow cool down after that. Sunday will see widespread areas
of above freezing temperatures across Southcentral and Southwest
mainland Alaska. Winds will be a big factor in these temperatures
with places on the lee sides of mountain ranges (with regard to
Southeast winds) will see significantly higher temperatures as
downslope conditions are likely. Some more uncertainty creeps into
the forecast Monday into Tuesday in Southcentral Alaska as some
of the models are bringing in a weak low through the eastern Gulf
of Alaska. However, the models that are detecting this feature
are having difficulty deciding where it will track with solutions
ranging from Cook Inlet to Yakutat. After the low early next week
moves out of the area, it looks like the major lows will track
south of the forecast area bringing in a cooling trend through the
week and only weak features to deal with for the middle to later
part of the week.
