Mesoscale Discussion 0679
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0204 AM CDT Wed May 10 2017

Areas affected...Parts of eastern New Mexico into the Texas South
Plains/Panhandle region

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 202...

Valid 100704Z - 100830Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 202
continues.

SUMMARY...Potential for strong/severe storms probably will linger
through at least the 09-11Z time frame. A new watch east of ww 202
is not currently anticipated, but perhaps not entirely out of the
question.

DISCUSSION...Recent radar trends suggest that the number of intense
storms has diminished, as the area of general convective development
gradually spreads out of eastern New Mexico into the the Texas
Panhandle and South Plains vicinity. Stronger activity appears to
be in the process of coming focused within a zone of enhanced
lower/mid tropospheric warm advection, on the northwestern periphery
of warmer and more strongly capping elevated mixed layer air to the
west and northwest of Lubbock and Plainview. Aided by a nocturnally
peaking southerly low-level jet (50+ kt at 850 mb), occasional
severe hail and wind gusts seem likely to remain possible through at
least the 09-11Z time frame, while spreading into/through the
remainder of the Texas Panhandle, adjacent northwest Texas and
perhaps parts of western Oklahoma.
