Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Main forecast highlights and challenges will involve a series of
strong storms forecast to move over the Bering Sea. The first low
has moved out over the Chukchi Sea with its front moving east
across Northern Alaska. The second currently sitting over the
western Bering Sea will move north along the eastern Siberian
coast and bring a quick shot of winter weather and strong winds. A
third, stronger low will move into the southern Bering Wednesday
morning and deepen as it moves over Saint Lawrence Island
Wednesday evening. The 19/12Z model guidance is in good agreement
through the first 48 hours, but increasing disagreement regarding
the active flow pattern over the Bering Sea through the rest of
the forecast period. The AKNAM12 and AKGFS22 are similar and have
had good run to run consistency with ECWMF being the outlier,
especially with the third low, thus used a blend of the AKNAM12
and AKGFS22. Above normal temperatures will persist across
Northern Alaska through the forecast period, where temperatures
will be 20 to 30 degrees warmer.

Western Interior and West Coast...A 965 mb low near the Gulf of
Anadyr and front over the Western Interior will continue to move
northwest while the low moves northwest over the Bering Strait
and Chukchi Sea through Wednesday morning. Blizzard conditions
persist over zones 207 and 209 and have decided to extend the
Blizzard Warning in time to noon today. Strong southwest flow
continues to pump moisture towards the southern slopes Brooks
Range (zones 208 and 217), where 15 to 30 inches of snow
accumulation is expected through Wednesday afternoon.

Despite having the winds dissipate and conditions improve over
zone 211 and 213, a quick shot of strong, gusty winds up to 60
mph will develop later this morning with low visibiltiy in blowing
snow and persist through midnight tonight before improving. Due
to this had to extend in time the Winter Storm Warning for zone
211. A Winter Storm Warning was issued for zone 213 covering this
event as well as the one on Wednesday.

For Saint Lawrence Island and Bering Strait, the next 24 to 48
hours will be a bit tricky as there are multiple hazards to
contend with. The AKGFS22 and AKNAM12 are both indicating that a
75 to 85 kt low level jet will move over Saint Lawrence Island
Wednesday afternoon and then the Bering Strait Coast by the
evening. This low level jet will weaken some as in moves north
over the Chukchi Sea, but will still be around 65 to 70 kts. For
Saint Lawrence Island, particularly Savoonga, this will be
similar to the strong wind event where strong downslope winds
caused damage to buildings and structures. Near blizzard
conditions are also very likely in this scenario with warning
level accumulating snow. Have decided to cancel the high wind
watch and morph it into a Winter Storm Warning with strong wording
for strong downslope winds on Wednesday. Winter weather or
blizzard hazards will also have to be considered for zones 207,
209, and 211 where more snow and low visibility due to blowing
snow is possible.

Eastern and Central Interior...Snow is already filling in on the
Pedro Dome radar this morning with snow with lowered visibility
being reported at Tanana and Bettles as well. Decided to start the
winter storm warning for zone 219 and the winter weather advisory
for zone 222 a few hours earlier. Still expecting heavy snow of 8
to 20 inches in the southeastern Brooks Range and in the Upper
Koyukuk Valley. Over the Central Interior and Middle Tanana
Valley, 4 to 7 inches are expected through tomorrow afternoon.
Gap winds in Alaska Range passes increased overnight with gusts
between 50 to 60 mph being reported. Since there was a winter
weather advisory already out for zone 226, decided to include
wording up gusts to 60 mph with low visibility in blowing snow.
Also issued an wind advisory for zone 225 with gusts up to 65 mph
through late this afternoon. Will see another round of stronger
gap winds in the Alaska Range Thursday morning and persist into
Friday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Blizzard conditions ongoing for
the western Arctic Coast this morning and is expected to persist
through this afternoon before conditions improve. Also, a winter
weather advisory for blowing snow and snow is in effect for zone
202 until this evening when conditions will improve as winds
decrease. Gusty gap winds through Brooks Range passes have
resulted in low visibility in blowing snow and snow where winter
weather advisories are in effect. As the gradient relaxes over he
Brooks Range and winds decrease, conditions should improve late
tonight. South to southwest winds will increase Wednesday night
into Thursday where blizzard conditions may be possible along the
western Arctic Coast. Temperatures will warm markedly over the
next couple of days, peaking late this week into this weekend,
where average temperatures will be 20 to 30 degrees above normal
for late December.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...A series of strong storms
moving north across the Bering and Chukchi Sea this week will
result in elevated water levels for much of western Alaska. Due to
the existing sea ice cover, there is uncertainty whether the
storms will create a significant amount of storm surge to impact
coastal communities. Shore fast ice will prevent or limit wave
runup and erosion in many locations except on Saint Lawrence
Island. There is the potential for water to cover ice, ice to push
up on south and southwest facing beaches, and minor flooding in
low lying areas. Much of the sea ice in this region will weaken,
and possibly deteriorate in some locations due to the prolonged
period of strong southerly winds and mild temperatures.
