Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED

.DISCUSSION...

Main forecast highlight will be a series of strong storms for the
west coast through the week. The first round is occurring
right now into Tuesday and expecting the next storm to
hit Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. Southwestly flow
over the mainland will bring heavy snow to the western interior
and central interior Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. The GFS
and NAM are in better agreement with the winds so we leaned
more towards the GFS for the afternoon forecast package. The
west coast will see the brunt of these storms from now through
Saturday.

Western Interior and West Coast...A strong 950 mb low over the
western Bering Sea and associated occluded front will move
northwest along the eastern Siberian Coast and over the Bering
Strait. BLizzard conditions occurring from Saint lawrence island
to the Bering strait and along the Seward Penn this afternoon
into Tuesday. Gusts over 70 mph are being reported at Wales and
the strongest winds will continue from now until midnight tonight.
Snowfall amounts will vary with the heaviest being in favored
upslope areas of the Brooks Range where there is a potential for
12 to 25 inches. Elsewhere, there is the potential to see 6 to 12
inches with up to 0.10" of ice accumulation for zones 214 and 215.
The main low will pass to the west of St. Lawrence Island Tuesday
afternoon, with two more low centers to follow.

The GFS and NAM are still progging a strong low level jet max at
of 70 to 80 kts at 850 mb over Saint Lawrence island and the
Bering strait Wednesday afternoon and Evening. This could produce
strong Mountain waves over the Island and strong downslope winds
at Savoonga and cause damage to buildings and structures. Have
issued a High wind watch for zone 213. Confidence is high that we
will need more blizzard warnings for the Seward Penn and points
north as well on Wednesday into Thursday.

Central and Eastern Interior...The aforementioned occluded front
will approach the central Interior by early Tuesday morning.
Moderate to heavy snow will spread east into western zones 218,
219, and 221 by early Tuesday morning and continue to slowly
spread east reaching the Middle Tanana Valley Tuesday afternoon,
and the Fortymile Country/Upper Tanana Valley by late Tuesday
evening. Winter Weather Advisories for zones 219 and 221 still
look good as 4 to 7 inches of snowfall is expected through
Wednesday afternoon. Have added winter weather advisories
for zone 222 for 4 to 7 inches and zone 226 for 6 to 11 inches.
Could see gusty winds in the Alaska range as well with low
visibility.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Weather front will bring
blizzard conditions to Northwest alaska through Tuesday afternoon.
Have added winter weather advisory for zone 202 as visibilities
and winds will ramp up there as well. Winds will diminish some
Tuesday night but pick up again on Wednesday from the south
again. Temps will warm up in the 20s above by Wednesday and
Thursday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
A series of strong storms moving north across the Bering and
Chukchi Sea this week will result in elevated water levels for
much of western Alaska. Due to the existing sea ice cover, there
is uncertainty whether the storms will create a significant amount
of storm surge to impact coastal communities. Shore fast ice will
prevent or limit wave runup and erosion in many locations except
on Saint Lawrence Island. There is the potential for water to
cover ice, ice to push up on south and southwest facing beaches,
and minor flooding in low lying areas. Much of the sea ice in this
region will weaken, and possibly deteriorate in some locations
due to the prolonged period of strong southerly winds and mild
temperatures.
