move to 70 nm southeast of Cordova at 997 mb Fri afternoon, then 
dissipate in Prince William Sound Fri night.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The very active pattern across southern Alaska continues this
morning. In the upper levels, a very deep, highly amplified trough
persists over most of the Bering and southwest Alaska extending
south well past 40N. A strong upper level low is really driving
the pattern, as two very strong jet streaks, on opposite sides of
the low, continue to keep the feature largely stationary. However,
frequent shortwaves rotating around the low get caught in the very
strong jets, and for southern Alaska, get sent racing northward
out of the subtropical Pacific into the Gulf Coast. These waves
are bringing along with it copious Pacific moisture, which being
confined to the jet, becomes what's called an "atmospheric river".
Atmospheric rivers are known for bringing lots of precipitation
and warm temperatures to the areas affected. When they remain
nearly stationary for long periods of time, as is happening to
Southcentral, prodigious amounts of rain and snow occur as a
result. Thus, snowfall amounts away from the coast towards
Thompson Pass and the Copper Basin will be measured in feet.

For Southwest Alaska and the Bering, those areas are under
persistent upper level troughing, so while the weather isn't
quiet, it certainly is far less impactful. The cold air aloft has
made the atmosphere quite unstable across those regions, so
scattered convective snow showers remain the primary weather
concern, along with areas of fog as the winds largely remain light
across the area.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The models are in decent agreement through the first 24 hours,
regarding the track of the next low to impact southern Alaska,
taking a track south and west of Kodiak Island. The associated
warm front extends northeast from the center of the low right up
the western Gulf Coast into Prince William Sound late Wednesday
night into Thursday. This pattern will result in another surge of
southerly winds into southern Alaska behind the front, with more
downsloping and warm temperatures the result. Another front may
impact the same area late Thursday into Friday, but the models are
in much less agreement on the strength and timing of that front.
Yet another low moves into the Gulf Friday, but the models are in
even more disagreement. In short, confidence rapidly diminishes
beyond 24 hours timing each of these waves, and their impacts on
where the cold and warm air masses are.

.AVIATION...
PANC...A storm system making its way into Southcentral will
largely miss Anchorage. However a chance remains of some snow
showers this morning that may briefly drop ceilings to MVFR. VFR
conditions with light winds return no later than midday, and
persist into the evening. A northerly down-Inlet wind will
develop Thursday morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

A deep and moist southerly upper level flow and associated frontal
boundary extends north across the Gulf to over the Copper River
Basin. A weak wave riding north along the frontal boundary will
move across the Cook Inlet region this morning a usher in a little
cold air to that region and allow for some relatively light
snowfall across the Anchorage Bowl and lower elevations of the
Matanuska Valley today. Snow will likely be heavy from Thompson
Pass north to over portions of the Copper River Basin through
early this evening, though warm air holding over the southeastern
Copper River Basin will likely keep a mix of rain and snow. Warm
temps along the north Gulf Coast will keep precipitation as rain.
The deep moisture plume and associated surface front will move
slowly east through today with precipitation diminishing across
much of the Anchorage Bowl this afternoon. A developing surface
low and associated front move north and west across the Gulf late
tonight and Thursday. This will usher in another bout of warming
temperatures, windy conditions, and mixed precipitation types
(mainly rain along the coasts) to Southcentral.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Currently a cold upper level trough is rotating through Southwest
Alaska and will continue north up the west coast of Alaska today.
Weak upper level ridging will build in from the southeast and up
over interior Southwest Alaska tonight. This ridging will clear
skies and warm mid-levels slightly. This will both strengthen
the inversion and bring the potential for some valley fog and
cold overnight tempertures to wind sheltered locations. A surface
low lifting north into the far southwestern Gulf and increasing
east to northeasterly flow across Southwest Alaska late tonight
through Thursday will help counterbalance this...especially in
locations near gaps or mountain passes along the west slope of the
Aleutain and Alaska Range.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
Broad upper troughing with multiple low centers drifting around
continues over the Bering. A more organized frontal system will
track from west to east down the length but to the south of the
Aleutian chain today and tonight before moving away to the
southeast Thursday. Stronger northerly flow will develop over the
Bering on Friday as ridging builds over the western Aleutians and
a low persists south of the Alaska Peninsula.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

The long term forecast shows no significant change in the overall
weather pattern that is currently locked in place. Strong ridging
over the eastern Gulf of Alaska will continue to steer numerous
weather systems into southern Alaska, and especially Southcentral
Alaska. Multiple rounds of heavy rain (and mountain snow) are
likely along the north Gulf Coast and Prince William sound through
this weekend. Meanwhile, most inland areas will be shielded from
most or all of this precipitation. There is some model agreement
on a stronger and more significant low climbing up the ridge and
slamming into southern Alaska with a strong front in the
Sunday/Monday time period, but details are still very much unclear
at this time.

Meanwhile, weather across the Bering Sea and Aleutians will be
unsettled but actually more benign than normal. No major storm
systems (i.e. storm-force or stronger) are expected in the next
week.
