AREA THUNDERSTORM OUTLOOK
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LUBBOCK TX
1132 AM CDT SAT MAY 25 1996

THERE IS A MODERATE RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON
AND TONIGHT ACROSS ALL OF THE SOUTH PLAINS...EXTREME SOUTHERN
TEXAS PANHANDLE AND LOW ROLLING PLAINS.

A VERY MOIST AIRMASS IS IN PLACE ACROSS WEST TEXAS.  AFTER THE
LOW CLOUDS WHICH HAVE BEEN IN PLACE ACROSS THE AREA THIS MORNING
DISSIPATE...STRONG SURFACE HEATING WILL TAKE PLACE THIS AFTERNOON.
THIS WILL RESULT IN THE ATMOSPHERE BECOMING VERY UNSTABLE.  AS A
STRONG UPPER LEVEL STORM SYSTEM LOCATED OVER ARIZONA MOVES CLOSER
TO WEST TEXAS...SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP
ACROSS EASTERN NEW MEXICO AND THE WESTERN SOUTH PLAINS THEN SPREAD
EAST ACROSS THE AREA THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS.

SOME OF THE THUNDERSTORMS THAT DEVELOP ACROSS THE AREA TODAY ARE
EXPECTED TO BECOME SEVERE WITH LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS. IN
ADDITION...THE WIND STRUCTURE OF THE ATMOSPHERE WILL BE FAVORABLE
FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF TORNADOES WITH A FEW OF THE THUNDERSTORMS.

ALL PERSONS ACROSS THE AREA ARE URGED TO REVIEW SEVERE WEATHER
AND TORNADO SAFETY RULES.  LISTEN TO RADIO...TELEVISION...OR NOAA
WEATHER RADIO pFOR POSSIBLE WATCHES OR WARNINGS.

SPOTTERS AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS SHOULD BE AWARE OF THE
