May 21, 2016 Eruption of Sinabung

May 18-24, 2016: Based on satellite images and information from PVMBG, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 18, 21-22, and 24 May ash plumes from Sinabung rose to altitudes of 3.6-5.5 km (12,000-18,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted S and E. BNPB reported that pyroclastic flow descended the flanks at 1648 on 21 May, killing six people and critically injuring three more. The victims were gardening in the village of Gamber, 4 km SE from the summit crater, in the restricted zone. The report noted that activity at Sinabung remained high; four pyroclastic flows descended the flanks on 21 May, and ash plumes rose as high as 3 km. A thick layer of ash has covered several villages in Indonesia after the eruption of Mount Sinabung on Sumatra island. At least seven people died after clouds of hot ash and gas consumed farmland around the mountain on Sunday.

Rescuers are still searching for survivors. The ash reached towns 12km (seven miles) away, local military head Agustatius Sitepu told AFP, including Gamber village in North Sumatra. (reference #11533)

An estimated 30,000 people were displaced from their homes after Mount Sinabung on the Indonesian island of Sumatra started erupting on June 2, 2010 - after 400 years of laying dormant. National Disaster Agency estimates the eruption of Mount Sinabung has caused more than $100 million (£71million) in damages. More than 30,000 affected residents have been evacuated from the region and buildings and wildlife have been destroyed. (reference #11537)
