   Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

   Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

   Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

   Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

   Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

   Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

Thunderstorms developed during the afternoon and evening hours as a low pressure system moved through a warm and humid airmass that was in place across the Ohio Valley.

The tornado likely began in a wooded area behind Longbranch Road, where downed trees were first noted. The most significant damage occurred at two residences on Longbranch Road. Nearly half of the metal roof of one residence was lifted and thrown in multiple directions, with insulation splattered on the residence and even onto parked vehicles. Trees on both properties were knocked down or blown over in multiple directions and the tree damage exhibited a very convergent pattern. The tornado is believed to have lifted in another wooded area to the southeast of Longbranch Road, as no other damage was seen on any roads to the southeast.
