EF0 tornado, Sylvan Hills to Warsaw, Arkansas, May 2, 2019

From Sylvan Hills to Warsaw, this EF0 tornado ran 5.1 miles across Pulaski County on May 2, 2019, touching down at 1:14 PM CDT and reaching 500 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $100,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mphthis tornado

Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mph

Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

The damage survey

55 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS LZK, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF0. The highest wind the damage implies is 85 mph.

What the Weather Service recorded

Areas of heavy rainfall were observed as a complex of showers and a few thunderstorms moved across central sections of Arkansas. Several inches of rain fell rather quickly, causing flash flooding. As this area of thunderstorms moved into the Little Rock Metro area, these thunderstorms strengthened, causing several weak tornadoes to touch down across central portions of the state. In addition to damage caused by tornadoes, some downburst winds were also observed.

This tornado formed just northeast of the National Weather Service where some small limbs were snapped off between Wayside Drive and Batesville Pike. As this tornado moved north, several trees were uprooted along Kellogg Acres Road near Windstone Drive, blocking the road and taking down power lines. Several more trees were either snapped or uprooted as the tornado moved north along Batesville Pike. The center of the tornado passed near the intersection of Batesville Pike and Jacksonville-Cato Road were some minor roof damage was noted. This tornado lifted near the intersection of Batesville Pike and Bridge Creek Road. Most of the damage along this track was uprooted trees, and trees falling onto homes or power lines.

This tornado touched down just south of the Faulkner County near the intersection of Frenchman Mountain and Watson Roads. This portion of the tornado blew down a couple trees and tree limbs. This tornado passed north into far southeast Faulkner County.

This tornado continued from far southeast Faulkner County into Pulaski County through the Bridgefield neighborhood where several trees were uprooted or tree limbs snapped off. This tornado continued north across Arkansas Hwy 89 were a small tree was uprooted. As the tornado continue north, more trees were either uprooted or limbs snapped near Sayles Road and Mitchell Road before lifting just north of Mitchel Road.

This short-lived tornado formed near West Cleland Road west of Cabot and continued north to near Arkansas Hwy 89. Mainly trees were either uprooted or limbs snapped, with some damage to a few outbuildings. Some roof damage was also noted to a few homes.

What this means

Ratings are the survey's, read off the damage rather than measured; the rating scale is above. Tornado counts rise through the record as reporting improved, so a year in the 1950s is not comparable with one today except for the strongest tornadoes, which were always noticed.
