* WHAT...For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 6 to 13 feet in the surf zone. For the Coastal Flood Warning, up to one foot of inundation above ground level expected in low- lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways (4.0 to 12.6 feet Mean Lower Low Water). * WHERE...Eastern Essex MA, Suffolk MA, Eastern Norfolk MA, Eastern Plymouth MA, Barnstable MA, Dukes MA and Nantucket MA Counties. * WHEN...For the High Surf Advisory, until 8 PM EDT Sunday. For the Coastal Flood Warning, from 5 PM this afternoon to 8 PM EDT Sunday. * IMPACTS...Strong northeast winds with large waves will result in minor coastal flooding with pockets of moderate coastal flooding over multiple high tide cycles from late today through the weekend. The water also may struggle to vacate the area after the high tides given persistent strong northeast winds. The greatest risk for coastal flooding appears to be setting up south of Boston and onto the Cape and Islands. In addition...the long duration of northeast winds coupled with large waves over multiple high tide cycles will result in areas of severe beach erosion for a prolonged period.
Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.
7-day current table
Strongest flood this week 4.6 kt, Mon, Sep 28 at 8:04 PM. Strongest ebb 4.8 kt, Tue, Sep 29 at 2:31 PM.

Other depths
NOAA predicts the current at more than one depth here. This page is for the shallowest; the water deeper down turns at different times and runs at different speeds.
| Depth | Strongest flood today | Strongest ebb today |
|---|---|---|
| 6 ft | 3.7 kt 5:53 PM | 4.0 kt 11:51 PM |
| 26 ft | 3.2 kt 5:49 PM | 3.5 kt 11:52 PM |
| 42 ft | 2.8 kt 5:47 PM | 2.9 kt 11:53 PM |
What this means
The flood is the tidal current running in from the sea, the ebb the current running back out. Slack water is the short turn between them, when the current is weakest: the time to cross a strong channel, anchor, or dive. Slack in a channel is not the time of high or low tide; it can come hours after.
Speeds are knots along the channel's main axis, and directions are degrees true toward which the water flows, as NOAA prints its tables. A current against the wind stands the waves up steep and close together.
Predictions are astronomical: the moon and the sun, not the weather. Strong wind, river flow after heavy rain and storm surge all change the real current.
