Storm Surge/Tide in Delaware
Every storm surge/tide event the National Weather Service has filed in Delaware, year by year, with the most significant episodes. Water pushed ashore above the normal tide by a storm’s winds and low pressure.

- Tornado and Tropical Storm in Delaware, August 27 to 30, 2011Hurricane Irene produced heavy flooding rain, widespread tropical storm force wind gusts, a confirmed tornado near Lewes in Sussex County, moderate to severe coastal flooding and beach erosion and caused two flooding related deaths, forced evacuations near the coast over the…
- Tropical Storm and Storm Surge in Delaware, September 18 to 20, 2003Tropical Storm Isabel caused tidal flooding up Delaware Bay, heavy rain and strong power outage producing winds. Isabel made landfall as a hurricane near Drum Inlet, North Carolina around 100 p.m. EDT on the 18th and weakened as it tracked farther inland.
- Storm Surge and Winter Storm in Delaware, February 16 to 17, 2003The most powerful storm to affect Delaware since the Blizzard of 1996 struck during the President's Day Weekend. Snow spread from south to north during the pre-dawn on Sunday the 16th. The heaviest snow fell during the daylight hours of the 16th.
- Tropical Storm and Storm Surge in Delaware, September 6, 2008Tropical Storm Hanna brought heavy rain and strong winds in Delaware and some minor tidal flooding in Delaware Bay on the 6th. Rain moved into the region during the morning, fell heavy at times in the afternoon and ended during the early evening.
- Storm Surge in Delaware, April 17 to 18, 2003The combination of spring tides and a persistent onshore flow produced pockets of minor tidal flooding along the Delaware coast, in Delaware Bay and tidal sections of the Delaware River. In addition, strong winds created heavy surf.
- Storm Surge in Delaware, October 13, 2005A persistent onshore flow for nearly a week caused higher than normal tides and this culminated with minor tidal flooding during the evening high tide on the 13th along the oceanfront, Delaware Bay and in the Delaware River.
- Storm Surge in Delaware, January 2 to 3, 2003The combination of a high pressure system over nearby Canada, a series of low pressure systems that passed southeast of Delaware and spring astronomical tides caused by the new moon produced widespread minor tidal flooding along the coast and Delaware Bay during the daytime high…
- Storm Surge and High Surf in Delaware, October 21 to 25, 2004The combination of a nearly stationary high pressure system over nearby Canada and low pressure systems over the western Atlantic produced six consecutive days of rough surf along the Delaware shore from October 20th through the 25th.
- Storm Surge in Delaware, April 2, 2005Strong southeast winds and runoff from the heavy rain in the Delaware River caused minor tidal flooding at the time of the late afternoon and early evening high tide along the Delaware River and Delaware Bay.
- Storm Surge and High Surf in Delaware, May 24 to 26, 2005The combination of a persistent onshore flow and spring tides associated with the departing perigean full moon caused minor tidal flooding during the evening high tides on the 24th and 25th.
- Storm Surge and High Surf in Delaware, October 24 to 25, 2005The combination of a developing northeaster and Hurricane Wilma caused minor to moderate tidal flooding along both the ocean and Delaware Bay with the afternoon high tide on the 25th. The wave action also caused severe beach erosion.
- Storm Surge in Delaware, December 11, 2004The combination of an onshore flow into Delaware Bay, run-off from the rain upstream and spring tides associated with the new moon caused minor tidal flooding during the daytime high tide on the 11th in Delaware Bay.
- Storm Surge in Delaware, October 15, 2004The combination of a southerly flow preceding a cold front and spring tides associated with the new moon caused pockets of minor tidal flooding at the times of the daytime high tide on the 15th along Delaware Bay.
- Storm Surge in Delaware, December 25, 2002A strong onshore flow preceding a northeaster produced minor tidal flooding at the time of high tide around noon on Christmas Day. The tide at Breakwater Harbor reached 6.77 feet above mean lower low water.
- Storm Surge in Delaware, December 14, 2003The circulation around a low pressure system moving northeast along the Eastern Seaboard and a high pressure system which begrudgingly moved away from New England produced onshore flow during the day on the 14th.
- Storm Surge in Delaware, November 24, 2003The combination of spring astronomical tides associated with the new moon and a weak southeast flow caused by an approaching cold front from the west in conjunction with a high pressure system over the nearby Atlantic Ocean produced minor tidal flooding along the Delaware River.
- Storm Surge in Delaware, January 3, 2003The combination of a high pressure system over nearby Canada, a low pressure system that moved along the Eastern Seaboard and spring astronomical tides caused by the new moon produced widespread minor tidal flooding along the Delaware River and tidal sections of its tributary…
- Storm Surge in Delaware, March 20 to 21, 2003The combination of southeast winds up Delaware Bay and runoff from heavy rain helped produce minor tidal flooding around the time of the overnight high tide (20th into the 21st) in the Delaware River and tidal sections of its tributaries.
- Storm Surge in Delaware, November 13, 2004The combination of a high pressure system over northern New England, a low pressure system moving northeast along the Atlantic seaboard and spring tides associated with the new moon produced minor tidal flooding during the morning high tide on the 13th along the Delaware Bay…
