A cold front moved slowly southward through the Mid-Atlantic, triggering scattered thunderstorms with heavy rainfall rates and severe weather. While shear was not very high (<30 knots), the atmosphere was considerably unstable with SBCAPE values of at least 2000 J/kg.

Deaths and injuries are direct and indirect together, as the offices filed them. Damage is property and crops in the dollars of the year, not adjusted for inflation, and only where an office estimated it.
A cold front moved slowly southward through the Mid-Atlantic, triggering scattered thunderstorms with heavy rainfall rates and severe weather. While shear was not very high (<30 knots), the atmosphere was considerably unstable with SBCAPE values of at least 2000 J/kg. Low level lapse rates and mid-level lapse rates were up to 8.5 C /km and 6.5 C/km, respectively, in the Piedmont. All these parameters, combined with DCAPE values of 1000-1400 J/kg, resulted in scattered severe thunderstorms that reached as far south as North Carolina. One storm in particular sent a swath of trees and power lines down in Mount Airy of Surry County. This storm formed and intensified after crossing the Blue Ridge and shortly dissipated in Stokes County.

Numerous trees were reported down in a swath from southwestern Mount Airy to Sheltontown. The reports are as follows:
A tree was reported down and landed on a car near the Walmart in Mount Airy.|A tree and a few power lines were reported down along Welch Road.|A tree was reported down, on a powerline, and on fire while blocking a roadway near Cooke Trucking Company.|A tree was reported down at the 100 Block of Bridgeport Road.|A tree was reported down and on a power line near Champ Creek.|A tree was reported down on a power line with both landing on a truck with occupants. None of the occupants were injured.|A tree was reported down at the 100 Block of Gilda Drive.|A tree was reported down at the 3100 Block of Westfield Road.|A tree was reported down and across the road between the 1500 and 1600 Blocks of Sheep Farm Road.|A tree was reported down near the railroad tracks in Pilot Mountain.|There were at least twenty separate reports of a tree down in Mount Airy.
