What happened

After a very cold winter, a significant amount of ice, with substantial depth, developed on main-stem rivers across eastern New York. Periodic multi-day stretches of late-season, above-normal temperatures subsequently led to considerable ice melt over a short amount of time. This ultimately led to flooding in Warren County in early to mid March after an ice jam broke loose on the Hudson River from the Route 28 Bridge at The Glen in Johnsburg. NWS Albany was made aware of the flooding and its requisite impacts from communication with both local news outlets and emergency managers in the area. According to these sources, water and large chunks of ice flowed rapidly downstream towards the towns of Thurman and Warrensburg. In Thurman, portions of River Road became inundated, specifically near The Glen Bridge, by both rapidly flowing water and large pieces of ice. This lead to the closure of the road for several days. In Warrensburg, portions of the Warren County Fish Hatchery also became inundated with some water and ice from a nearby branch of the Hudson River. Additionally, Cronin's Golf Course, which lies right along the Hudson River, became inundated with significant amounts of water. Areal drone images from a local news outlet showed what appears to be the entire golf course covered in water and ice. Due to the substantial nature of this ice jam, flooding impacted these areas for several days after the initial onset.

Warren County Emergency Managers, with the help of local broadcast media partners, reported that at 10 A.M. on Thursday, March 12th, an ice jam that had accumulated near the Route 28 Bridge at The Glen in Johnsburg, NY broke free and rapidly flowed downstream. Large chunks of ice were swiftly carried downstream towards the towns of Thurman and Warrensburg. In the town of Thurman, portions of River Road became inundated, specifically near The Glen Bridge, by both rapidly flowing water and large pieces of ice which lead to the closure of the road for several days.
