.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 126 PM MDT Tue Apr 7 2026

A cold front is slowly making its way southward through Eastern
Idaho tonight into early Wednesday morning. The main thing it is
bringing us is increasingly gusty winds and a slight cool down for
tomorrow afternoon. The WIND ADVISORY remains in effect until 9 PM
this evening for parts of the Snake River Plain where gusts will be
around 50 mph this afternoon. Even outside of the advisory area,
expect gusts to range from 35 to almost 45 mph. As for
precipitation, chances remain low with the cold front passing
through, only maxing out around 25 percent in parts of the Eastern
Highlands this afternoon. Even then, QPF remains generally non-
existent for most of that area, with only a few hundredths on one or
two mountain tops. With gusty winds and little to no precipitation
in the Snake River Plain, we are expecting some more blowing dust
across the area, too. So, travelers should remain alert and aware,
especially heading north on I-15 out of Idaho Falls.

By Thursday, an area of low pressure off the coast of northern
California will bring some light (20 percent) precipitation chances
to the South Hills. That low will be pushed a bit farther southward
on Friday and Saturday as another low drops into the PNW and models
show these two lows basically combining together through the weekend
to bring continued rain chances and cooler temperatures to our CWA.
The exact track of this whole mess is yet to be ironed out between
the ECMWF and GFS, but both models show more widespread rain and
mountain snow chances from Friday through next Monday. Highs will go
from low to mid 70s on Thursday and Friday to low and mid 50s by
Sunday and Monday with gusty winds throughout that time period, too.
But given how quickly and drastically models have been changing over
just a few days, wouldn't get too hung up on how things currently
look as we expect these swings and changes to continue.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z WEDNESDAY/...
Issued at 1139 AM MDT Tue Apr 7 2026

VFR conditions expected at area terminals through the period.
Winds will be the biggest concern today, especially in the
valley terminals of KPIH, KIDA and KBYI, with winds expected to
increase in the next hour or so bringing sustained winds in the
20-25 kt range with higher gusts expected into the early
evening. KDIJ and KSUN will also see breezy conditions but
closer to the 15-20 kt range. There's a low, although non-zero,
chance of a brief shower later this afternoon around KDIJ as
shown by some hi-res model guidance but the chances for this
seem quite low but maintained VCSH wording nevertheless. Winds
will taper off later this evening but remain sustained around 10
kts or so into the day on Wednesday.
