What happened

The episode as NWS SHV wrote it up.

Following multiple days of persistent upper ridging over much of the Four State Region from July 20th-24th, strong subsidence beneath the ridge resulted in additional compressional warming, which enabled afternoon temperatures to climb into the mid 90s across the western sections of East Texas. Coupled with ample low level moisture that spread back west into the area from Southwest Arkansas and North Louisiana ahead of another westerly moving tropical wave across the Northern Gulf, heat indices ranged from 105-110 degrees on the 24th and 25th.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 1223 AM CDT Thu Jul 24 2025

The upper-level ridge axis will hold serve today as it becomes
largely anchored across the heart of our region in what looks to
be our hottest day of the year thus far. The center of the ridge
will promote strong compression as sinking air aloft is forced
downward toward the sfc. As a result, upper 90s to lower 100s are
expected areawide with maximum heat indices ranging from 105-109
degrees during the hours of peak heating from late morning through
early evening. Isolated areas across our SE zones may even briefly
reach 110+ for max heat index, but the rather isolated and brief
nature of these occurrences precludes upgrading to an Extreme Heat
Warning.

While the majority of the region will remain dry once again today,
some isolated to widely scattered late day convection is possible
across our southeasternmost zones with better coverage expected
as we move into Friday and Saturday. This will be the result of
the upper ridge axis becoming more displaced across the SE CONUS,
just enough to allow for convection to develop across the northern
Gulf and ride along the southern periphery of the ridge into our
southern and eastern zones. The best coverage is expected to occur
during the diurnally active periods of peak heating on both Friday
and Saturday afternoon, possibly extending into the early evening
hours before dissipating.

Unfortunately, convective coverage appears to dwindle once again
by late weekend and especially during the first half of next week
as the upper ridge reasserts its influence across our region. As a
result, look for high temperatures to push back toward upper 90s
to triple digit territory areawide. Some promising signals of more
scattered convection returning by late next week still appears to
be in the offing as the ridge axis is progged to shift westward
and allow a weak frontal boundary to approach our region from the
north by the end of the week. In addition, the potential for some
tropical influences by way of a disturbance shifting westward over
the northern Gulf is still something worth monitoring so at least
there is a hint of increasing rain chances farther out in the
long term.

Issued at 515 AM CDT Thu Jul 24 2025

Thin cirrus continues to invade our airspace from the southeast
this morning and should see a growing cu field begin forming as
well by late morning with this cu field continuing to rise due to
daytime heating. Seeing some IFR ceilings just southwest of the
LFK terminal early this morning with this moisture moving
northeastward so did include a TEMPO group at the LFK terminal for
an IFR ceiling and MVFR VSBYs but there should be no other
concerns across our terminals through at least the Noon hour.
Convection this afternoon could impact the MLU terminal so did
continue the trend of VCTS beginning as early as Noon today and
continuing that wording through 03z this evening.

Cannot rule out some IFR ceilings after midnight due to the
increasing moisture from the south and east into our airspace as
well.

Look for mostly variable winds today with speeds under 10kts.
