Satellite this afternoon already shows multiple dust plumes
activating across northern Chihuahua state of Mexico and across
portions of southwestern and southern New Mexico. As of this
writing, multiple Dust Storm Warnings has been issued with a few
more likely impacting travel across portions of southwest,
southern New Mexico and far west Texas.
The upper trough continues responsible for the storng winds and
blowing dust will slowly move closer to the area over the next 24
hours. The lee trough over eastern and northern Colorado this
afternoon that bears part of the responsibility for the strong
winds and dust will move well northeast of the area on Tuesday. An
analysis of this morning deterministic model guidance shows
finally brings the upper trough into the area by late tonight. The
trough will over the Borderland, but there lee troughing will be
up in eastern Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle, which will
equate to low end gusty conditions in the afternoon over most of
the Borderland on Monday. With the ongoing dry conditions with
areas along the International Border in extreme drought, and
afternoon breezes up to 25 mph, a few plumes of blowing dust are
possible from local sources near the International Border Monday
afternoon.
By Tuesday, model solutions show the trough draped over the
Borderland with both solutions hinting very slowly pushing east of
the area until sometime Wednesday morning. On the heels of the
departing upper trough, another shortwave will dive south out of
British Columbia on Tuesday night and move south along the US west
coast on Wednesday. A shortwave ridge will build in behind the
departing trough around Wednesday afternoon with light west to
southwest flow setting up over the Borderland. The aforementioned
trough along the US west coast will continue to dig southward with
the axis over southern California by Thursday. Both the GFS and
ECMWF show a closed low forming over southern California sometime
on Thursday, before dissipating as the upper ridge over the
Borderland builds northward to cover much of the western half of
the US by Friday.
As we head into the weekend, model solutions shows another upper
trough just off the US west coast on Saturday as a dry line pushes
areas mainly east of the Rio Grande in the morning before
retreating eastward in response to moving east across Calfornia
and Nevada on Sunday. The current forecast package has slight POP
chances for Saturday, but confidence is very low with this
solution and the likely outcome is those chances will be pulled in
future forecast packages. For Sunday, the aforementioned trough
across along the US west coast will dive south through California
on Saturday and into southern Nevada on Sunday. At the same time,
weak lee troughing sets up in eastern and northeastern Colorado
allow southwesterly flow to strengthen as early last late Saturday
night into Sunday across the Borderland. If this scenario occurs,
then there are some concerns for strong winds, blowing dust, and
critical fire weather conditions. Temperatures will remain
seasonal through the upcoming work week across the Borderland.

Strong winds and blowing dust will create significant impacts
especially for those near the International Border this afternoon
mainly at terminals in lowland locations. Winds will quickly ramp
up by this afternoon with southwest winds 30 to 35 kt by mid
afternoon with gusts up to 50+ kt. Once the dust gets going this
afternoon, there will be short durations of IFR and LIFR, but some
periods of VLIFR could occur as well. Winds and dust will
gradually drop off around just after sunset. Skies will be
SCT250, mainly portions of El Paso and Hudspeth counties with SKC
elsewhere. VFR conditions will return to the area around the
03-06z time frame.

Low Min RH values will prevail through the middle of the upcoming
work week with just some afternoon breeziness in the forecast
each day. Winds will remain just below the threshold needed for a Red
Flag Warning Monday across the Sacramento Mountains with elevated
to critical conditions in the forecast for Monday. For Tuesday
through Friday, winds are forecast to stay below critical
thresholds leading to near critical to critical fire weather
conditions through the end of the work week. Vent rates for
through Wednesday will range from very good to excellent.
