Very cold air associated with arctic high pressure settled over the North Carolina mountains during the early morning hours of the 9th. Temperatures in the single digits and teens and winds gusting from 10 to 20 mph resulted in minimum wind chill values of 0 to -10 during this time. Stronger winds and temperatures at or below 0 caused wind chills of -15 or colder above 5000 feet.
