.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Thursday night)
Issued at 232 PM CDT Wed Apr 30 2025
WV imagery this afternoon shows an upper trough entering our CWA,
for another round of convection this afternoon. 12Z KMAF raob came
in w/deep-layer shear of almost 70 kts, and CAMs keep this going
this afternoon w/40-60 kts rounding the base of the trough. Raob
also showed mid-lvl lapse rates of almost 8 C/km, and those don't
look to decrease either. RTMA analysis and surface obs show
westerlies increasing and mixing the dryline east. If CAMs are
right, convection will initiate ~ 19-20Z, and will be confined to
the northeast. This looks like a quick event as westerlies quickly
mix the dryline east, and this activity should be east of the area
by 00Z.
Tonight, mostly clear skies and the absence of the LLJ will promote
efficient radiational cooling, allowing overnight minimums to cool
to just a couple of degrees above normal.
Thursday looks to be a down day wrt convection, as the dryline will
remain east of the area. Highs should average ~ 5 F above normal.
Thursday night, a 40+kt LLJ is forecast to redevelop, advecting rich
Gulf moisture back into the area and retreating the dryline west.
Isolated convection will be possible east of this feature, but bulk
shear will be tepid compared to the last week, and no severe
activity is anticipated attm. Increased boundary layer moisture and
mixing should add 3-4 F to overnight lows compared to tonight's.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday through Tuesday)
Issued at 232 PM CDT Wed Apr 30 2025
Quasi-zonal(west to east) flow continues for Friday and into this
weekend. With shortwave troughs being pushed through during that
time, expect unsettled weather to continue. A cold front moves
through on Friday and keeps areas north of I-10 in the 70s. Shower
and storm chances increase with the passage of the front. Forecast
soundings for both Friday and Saturday show an environment once
again conducive for severe storms, but details on how likely severe
storms will be to form or their location will be settled in future
forecast updates. Similar to the last several days, timing for
storms will continue to be in the afternoon to evening hours.
Beyond this weekend, a slight warmup is seen with a continued spring-
like pattern expected. Long range guidance continues to show
medium(40-60%) chances for showers and storms, but given the more
isolated nature of spring time convection, have opted to lower those
chances slightly to better reflect areal coverage of storms. Plenty
of low level moisture looks to remain across the region as the
dryline meanders back and forth over the area.
