Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 312 AM PDT Thu Mar 27 2025 .SYNOPSIS..Gusty southwest to westerly winds today may produce blowing dust in some areas. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected this afternoon across mainly Elko County. Dry tonight. Valley rain and mountain snow showers develop across northern NV on Friday, with rain changing to snow Friday night as showers expand into portions of central NV. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Friday night. As an upper level low moves in along the west coast today, southwesterly winds will increase across NV. A Wind Advisory remains in effect for Humboldt County from 11 AM this morning through 8 PM this evening during which time southwesterly winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts up to 55 mph are expected in most valley locations. Mountains of Humboldt County will have a 40-70% chance of wind gusts reaching or exceeding 58 mph, which is the low end of High Wind Warning criteria. SW to westerly wind of 10 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 45 mph are likely over the remainder of northern and central NV this afternoon and early evening. Gusty winds may produce blowing dust today, with the best chances across Humboldt County. There is a 25-40% chance of rain showers across portions of northeastern NV this afternoon and early evening, as well as a 10-15% chance of thunderstorms. Showers taper off into the late evening hours with dry conditions across the region tonight. Shortwave energy clips northern NV Friday with a 30-60% chance of valley rain and mountain snow to areas north of the I80 corridor. Cooler air moves in over the region late Friday evening and overnight with snow levels lowering to valley floors. The shortwave energy is expected to extend south and east by late Friday night, with light snow showers of generally less than a quarter inch in valley areas across northern Humboldt County, much of Elko County, and into White Pine County. Impacts are expected to be minimal in these areas due to the recent warmth which will prohibit snow accumulations on most roadways. .LONG TERM...Saturday through next Thursday. A longwave trough will remain stationary off the Pacific Northwest coast throughout the weekend and most of next week. A series of shortwave troughs will bring precipitation, gusty winds, and cooler temperatures to Nevada during this time period. Most of the precipitation will fall north of I-80 and over eastern Nevada. The first trough will move through the state on Saturday, with light snow accumulations in the valleys, up to 1 inch in higher elevation roadways and mountain passes, and 3-5 inches in the mountain ranges. Little to no impacts on roadways are expected. Highs will be in the upper 40s and lower 50s. Breezy conditions expected in the afternoon, with 10-15 kt wind speeds and gusts up to 20 kts. Precipitation will clear out by Saturday evening as a ridge moves in. Temperatures will warm to the upper 50s in most areas, with highs in the low 50s in northern Elko county. Starting on Sunday afternoon, models are suggesting leftover moisture from an atmospheric river will move over our area, resulting in widespread, but light, precipitation in northern and central Nevada. Winds will start out breezy on Sunday, then become stronger next week as the jet streak moves overhead. Afternoon wind gusts may reach up to 30 kts. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions will prevail at all Northern and Central Nevada terminals through at least the next 24 hours. South to southwest wind gusts near 25 knots expected at KEKO, KTPH, and KBAM Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening. South wind gusts near 30 knots anticipated at KELY Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening. Southwest wind gusts near 40 knots expected at KWMC Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening. && .HYDROLOGY...Warm temperatures continue to help increase the melt rate of mid and high-elevation snowpack, which will make it into area creeks and streams. Faster responding creeks that will need to be watched for higher flows include Martin Creek in Humboldt County, the Owyhee River, Bruneau River, and Salmon Falls Creek in Elko County. The Bruneau River reached action stage (6.0 feet) Wednesday night, and is expected to remain in or near action stage today with the continued above normal temperatures. At this time the Bruneau River is not expected to reach minor flood stage (7.0 feet). Flooding is not expected elsewhere on regional creeks or rivers at this time, but water will be flowing swiftly. Residents and outdoor enthusiasts are urged to use caution when walking along riverbanks as run off water will be flowing rapidly with cold spring melt water. Hypothermia can occur rapidly if someone were to fall in while swift flows can carry a person downstream. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
