Additional snow amounts ranged from 5-10 inches, with a few higher elevation sites receiving just over a foot of new snow. Elsewhere, high temperatures were only in the 40s for lower elevations while some Tahoe communities remained below freezing on the 1st, about 15-20 degrees below average.

.DISCUSSION...
Our late season storm is well underway as rain and snow showers
continue to advance across the region per recent radar obs. Our
ongoing shower activity (as of this afternoon) is the first of
two main rounds of precipitation that lasts into the evening
before winding down tonight. Until then, periods of heavy Sierra
snow will persist with rain or a rain-snow mix for foothills and
valleys. Gusty W/SW winds will continue into the evening before
subsiding with strongest gusts of 45-55 mph expected south of
US-50. There remains a 10-20% chance of thunderstorms through the
afternoon in the Sierra, especially near the Tahoe Basin.
A diffuse cold front will sweep southward late this afternoon and
evening, increasing shower coverage/intensity as it passes. Snow
levels fall to valley floors in the wake of the cold frontal
passage, allowing light snowfall for foothills and valleys,
including the Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden area, in time for
this evening's commute. Snowfall will struggle to accumulate with
the higher sun angle, especially if we can get occasional breaks
in the clouds this afternoon before the cold front arrives.
However, snowfall rates may be intense enough to achieve a dusting
to 0.5" on roads with 1-2" possible on grassy/elevated surfaces
across valley communities. As such, slick roads and travel delays
are possible for those traveling this evening. Showers begin to
taper off tonight once the cold front has passed, giving us a
brief reprieve from the stormy weather.
This storm is apparently a big fan of messy commutes as the second
band of heavier showers moves through before and during the
Tuesday morning commute. Snow is expected for all elevations
Tuesday morning with better potential for accumulating snow for
foothill areas and valley floors, albeit any will be light. Still,
even light snow can create problems for drivers so drive slowly
and leave plenty of time to reach your destination. Moderate to
heavy snow resumes in the Sierra with continued significant travel
impacts. It'll also looks to be a windy morning as a quick burst
of 30-40 mph gusts precede the cold front. Rain and snow becomes
more showery during the late morning and afternoon Tuesday with a
chance of pellet showers and thunderstorms (10-20%). We'll wrap up
this storm Tuesday evening, which will have provided an
additional 1-2 feet of snow along highest Sierra peaks, 6-12"
inches for lower Sierra communities, and up to 4" for foothill
areas.
A slight chance of showers (10-30%) continues Wednesday through
Thursday, dropping to 10% or less by Friday, then we'll be
warming up and drying out as we head into the weekend. Looking
ahead, a warmer and drier weather pattern is favored during the
second week of April.

.AVIATION...
Primary concerns through Tuesday for KRNO and other Sierra Front
terminals (e.g., KCXP, KMEV) will be occasional MVFR to IFR flight
conditions due to rain and snow showers, and impacts from LLWS and
mountain wave turbulence. Rain showers with perhaps some snow mixed
in will transition to all snow sometime between 00-02Z, which begins
a period in which IFR conditions are most likely at KRNO/KCXP/KMEV
that lasts through around 06Z. Flight conditions improve to VFR
standards from 06Z through 15Z as showers abate, but chances of snow
showers increase for the mid-morning and afternoon Tuesday. Any snow
accumulation on runways at KRNO-KCXP-KMEV will be light at best (up
to 1") through Tuesday under a higher sun angle.
Periods of moderate to heavy snow in the Sierra will reduce CIGS/VIS
to IFR/LIFR conditions at KTRK-KTVL-KMMH through Tuesday. There
appears to be a very brief lull in the snowfall between 05-10Z where
flight conditions improve before another prolonged period of
moderate to heavy snow begins. Additional snow accumulation on KTRK-
TVL runways will vary from 6-12" through Tuesday with an additional
2-5" at KMMH. There is also a 10-20% chance of lightning within 10
miles of Sierra terminals this afternoon.
S-SW surface gusts of 25-35 kts will continue this afternoon at
regional terminals beneath SW-W FL100 winds of 40-50 kts, lending to
LLWS and turbulence impacts. Winds at the surface and aloft weaken
in the overnight, but FL100 winds increase after 12Z Tuesday and
will pose additional LLWS/turbulence concerns Tuesday morning.

.AVALANCHE...
Periods of heavy mountain snow and strong ridgetop winds continue
through Tuesday with heaviest snowfall (1-2"/hour) favored into this
evening, then again Tuesday morning and afternoon. Snow wraps up in
earnest by Tuesday evening, providing an additional 1-2 feet of
snow (1.5-2.5" of SWE) along highest peaks around the Tahoe Basin
into northern Mono County and 8-16" (0.5-1.5" of SWE) elsewhere.
Expect SLRs to remain in the 9-12:1 ballpark through Tuesday.
There is a 10-20% chance of lightning today and Tuesday with best
chances near the Tahoe Basin.
