A strong ridge positioned south of the islands interacted with the trough. This convergence generated strong, gusty winds, with maximum gusts reaching up to 49 MPH throughout the day.

On the morning of September 17th, strong gusty winds caused a breadfruit tree to fall in the village of Ili'ili. An NWS employee confirmed the tree blocked the eastbound lane of the main road. Wind gusts in the region were estimated to have reached 50 mph.
