An extreme rainfall event occurred over American Samoa from July 23rd to 27th, as a trough over the islands converged with a strong ridge from the south. The system dropped 13.62 inches of rain at WSO Pago Pago during this time, including 3.6 inches from 2:50 AM to 6:50 AM on July 26th.
This weather event triggered widespread flash flooding and multiple landslides across Tutuila, with floodwaters inundating numerous homes. According to Vaetagaloa Glen Lefiti, Director of the American Samoa Department of Homeland Security, 23 families and households have been affected by flooding and landslides from the rainfall. A landslide in Gataivai village resulted in the death of a woman and injured two children. Seven families were forced to seek shelter after their homes were declared uninhabitable. In response to the damage, Acting Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr. declared a State of Disaster Emergency on July 27th.

An NWS Employee showed pictures of a home in Nuuuli Village with considerable flooding due to heavy rainfall on the morning of July 26th.
Emergency Management Director confirmed a deadly landslide in Gataivai Village on the morning of the 26th. Local radio station, KHJ, reported mud and debris from the landslide broke through the walls of a home, toppling the bedroom of a 61-year-old woman who died on the scene. Emergency Management reported two children were also trapped but were rescued by local responders.
An NWS employee reported a flash flood in Seetaga village on the morning of the 26th, caused by heavy rainfall. The flooding was a result of streams from the Lealafaalava and Leileia Mountains overflowing, carrying rocks and sediment that covered properties and the main road. A village resident also reported to WSO Pago Pago that their home was flooded.
A flash flood in Nu'uuli village broke through a property wall, according to an NWS employee. The flood dropped rocks and sediment onto the main road at the intersection with Nu'uuli Road, near Paradise Pizza.
A flash flood occurred in Faganeanea village due to overflowing streams from Matafao mountain. This caused a property retaining wall to break and flood a home in the village.
A resident of Matu'u village reported to the WSO in Pago Pago that flash flooding from the Afuelo stream, which is runoff from Matafao Mountain, flooded several homes on the morning of the 26th.
An NWS employee reported a landslide caused by heavy rainfall that covered both sides of the main road in Fatu ma Futi village with rocks and sediment.
A resident of Fagatogo reported to WSO Pago Pago that their family home was flooded on the morning of the 26th due to heavy rainfall, likely aided by water flowing from nearby higher elevations.
On the morning of the 26th, a Faga'alu resident reported to WSO Pago Pago that their home was flooded. The excessive rainfall was likely compounded by runoff from Matafao Stream, which runs through the village.

An NWS employee reported flooding along the Tafuna Correctional Facility near Lions Park. Water covered both sides of the road along Lions Park due to an overflowing stream.
As the offices recorded each death: direct deaths were caused by the weather itself, indirect ones by something it set in motion.
