Flash Flooding and Flooding in West Virginia, April 11 to 16, 2024

High water was observed across multiple spots in the town of Varney. Water backed up into a few homes.

Multiple trees were blown down near the West Virginia and Kentucky state line.

One tree was blown down along State Route 52 outside of Gilbert.

A tree was blown down onto Coon Branch Road, blocking one lane of traffic.

The 300 block of Harbour Lane in the town of Hurricane flooded.

A pine tree, about 12 to 15 inches in diameter, was downed and blocked Shawnee Drive near the local apartment buildings.

A tree was blown down in the area of Route 85 and Old River Road in Madison.

One tree was blown down onto Spruce Laurel Road in Clothier.

Three large trees were blown down on top of power lines along Clear Fork Road in Dorothy.

A tree and power line were knocked down on Ashford Nellis Road in Ashford.

A few trees were knocked down along Blue Pennant Road in Whitesville.

One tree was blown down at the 500 block of Lake Stephens Road near Surveyor.

Several trees were blown down between Leewood and Acme.

A tree was blown down on Market Road near Pinewood Drive.

A large tree at the 600 block of Range Road in Harper was blown down.

A few trees were blown down in Smithers on Midland Trail.

Downed trees and lines resulted in power outages on Ranchland Lane.

Flooding occurred along the road at the 1600 block of Route 34 in Hurricane.

High water was observed in multiple spots in and near the town of Cairo. These included Main Street, Cairo Road, and Rolling River Road. A water rescue also occurred in this area.

Flooding occurred outside several structures in the town of Pennsboro, and along East Washington Avenue and Lamberton Road in the town of Ellenboro.

Power outages were observed along Pisgah Ridge Road due to downed trees.

Power outages from fallen trees and lines were observed on Nicholas Road off of Clay Maysel Road just west of Clay.

One tree fell and hit a gas well at the 4900 block of Big Flint Road in West Union.

High water crossed the roadway at Teays Valley Road and City Park Reservoir.

A few trees were blown down on County Road 46 in the Ivydale area.

Two trees were blown down on County Road 40 between Nebo and Floe.

Flooding was observed on Main Street within the Clay township.

Flooding was observed on Route 34 at Mize Road in Hurricane.

Flooding was observed along the Daniel Boone Parkway in Peytona.

High water was observed over parts of Toms Fork Road in the Alum Creek area.

In Berwind, a tree was blown down onto Hartwell Cemetery Road.

High water was observed across parts of Greenbrier Street in Charleston. Water rescues occurred along Ruffner Avenue.

High water observed across portions of Roxalana Road in Dunbar.

High water completely covered the road at the 3900 block of US Highway 33 near Glenville.

High water was observed in multiple spots of Garfield Road, especially near Lynn Camp Road.

Flooding was observed on Griffiths Branch Road in Madison.

A water rescue was conducted on Betty Lane in Clothier due to severe flooding.

Water rescues occurred along Smith Creek Road in the Tornado area. A local resident also observed water covering Smith Creek Road and portions of their front yard.

Rock Lake underpass off of the Kanawha Turnpike became impassable due to flooding.

Water rescues occurred along Green Valley Drive in Jefferson.

Several businesses flooded along Sissonville Drive. Water rescues occurred near the 4000 block of Sissonville Drive.

Vehicles and a garage were flooded at a residence in Glenville.

Collins Run Road was underwater, with spots that were chest deep.

High water occurred at Charleston Road and McClane Pike in Red House.

High water was observed along College Parkway in Parkersburg.

High water was observed on Park View Drive in Parkersburg.

High water occurred across a local road in Sedalia.

Water rescues occurred in Loudendale where motorists drove into flooded roadways.

Multiple areas of high water were observed in the town of Salem. Main Street had water covering both lanes in spots.

High water observed at the 6900 block of Winfield Road in the town of Winfield.

High water was observed along Route 152 near a storage facility in Lavalette.

High water occurred on 36th Street at Rollins Street in Parkersburg.

Multiple citizens observed flooding in Hewett. High water made roads impassable across the town.

The Charleston river gauge on Elk Twomile Creek exceeded its bankfull level on the evening of April 11th. After cresting at around 6.9 feet, water levels returned below bankfull levels that night. The bridge to the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association off of Greenbrier Street flooded along with sections of Rutledge Road.

Flooding was observed at several locations in Madison.

In Spencer, high water was observed along several local roads.

Flooding occurred along Horse Creek Road near the community of Spurlockville.

Flooding occurred on McIntyre Fork Road near Center Point.

A trained spotter in Alum Creek observed high water across portions of Route 214 off of US 119.

Areas of ponding and high water occurred along portions of I-64 around Elk.

High water was observed on portions of Childress Road in Alum Creek.

Flooding was observed at the 900 block of Camp Creek Road in Ridgeview, where a vehicle became submerged in the high water.

Multiple areas of flooding and impassable sections of Burning Springs Run and Straight Creek Road were observed.

High water and impassable roads were observed at the 4000 block of Munday Road east of Palestine.

High water was observed along sections of Tuckers Creek Road.

High water was observed in the town of Glen Alum, affecting the Mouth of Glen Alum, Dotson Hollow and Left Fork Bens Creek.

Olympia Fields Drive in Winfield flooded.

Flooding was observed on Middlebourne Road near the town of Wallace.

Severe flooding occurred along Homer Smith Road due to Grass Lick Creek overflowing. The road was impassable while the creek was out of its banks.

Flat Fork Road was flooded with about 1 to 2 feet of moving water.

Flooding closed Snowbird Road in West Union.

Middle Island Creek near Middlebourne exceeded bankfull on the night of April 11th. The creek continued to rise to a crest of around 24.1 feet on the afternoon of the 12th, then fell returned to its banks again that night. Major flooding occurred along routes 18 and 24 on either side of Middlebourne. 4H camp buildings, county fairgrounds, and the agricultural field near the gauge flooded while the creek was out of its banks.

Middle Island Creek at Little rose above its bankfull level on April 11th, just before midnight. The creek crested to around 20.1 feet on the evening of the 12th and then returned to its banks the next morning. Flooding reached private cabins and the access road near the Friendly Road bridge. Cabins and the bait house near the gauge also experienced flooding. Several primary and secondary roads flooded in low areas along Middle Island Creek and tributaries flowing into Middle Island Creek.

High water cut off access to the Davis Creek area.

Haines Branch Road flooded at the northbound Haines Branch exit 116 of I77. Water rose up to the guardrail. The northbound exit was subsequently closed.

On the 11th, just before midnight, the Mud River exceeded its bankfull level near Griffithsville. The river reached a crest to around 12.4 feet a couple of hours later and then eased back below bankfull before sunrise on the 12th. Fields and low areas along the Middle Fork Mud River both upstream and downstream of the gauge flooded during the time the river was out of its banks.

Flooding was observed along Liberty Street in Salem.

Below the town of Mac Farlan, the South Fork Hughes River exceeded its bankfull level not long after midnight on the 12th. Waters rose to a crest of around 25.2 feet on the afternoon of the 12th and then fell back below bankfull that evening. Low sections of Oxbow Road below the gage flooded. Flooding also occurred in the agricultural field next to the river and just below the Staunton Turnpike bridge.

Flooding was observed along portions of Cisco Road and adjacent fields.

At Glenville, the Little Kanawha River rose above its 23 foot flood stage on the morning of April 12th. The river crested to around 25 feet that afternoon and then receded below flood stage again the same evening. Flooding impacted most of Elm Street and sections of Brooklyn Drive and River Street during this time.

Flooding occurred along Route 60 from Hurricane to Teays Valley.

Camp Virgil Tate Road flooded at the entrance to Camp Virgil Tate.

Flooding observed on State Route 18 about three quarters of a mile before Crystal Lake.

Flooding from the Pocatalico River impacted Cicerone Road in Walton.

Little Tygart Creek at Mineral Wells climbed above its 11 foot bankfull level on the afternoon of April 12th, then continued to rise to a crest of around 15.3 feet the following evening. Backwater from of the Ohio River sustained flooding along Little Tygart Creek until the morning of the 15th. This level of flooding impacted most of Speedway Road and sections of Woodridge Drive and Dickens Drive. Flooding also reached a home on Mayo Drive above the intersection with Irene Lane.

The Ohio River at Parkersburg rose above flood stage just after midnight on the 13th of April. The river reached a crest of around 38.5 feet early the next morning, then fell below flood stage before sunrise on the 15th. Several homes flooded in the Happy Valley and Point Drive areas near Parkersburg, along the Little Kanawha River. A few homes flooded on Annas Drive in Vienna, West Virginia, as well as Dave's Marina, Walnut Street, and Scott Avenue in Belpre, Ohio.

The Ohio River at Point Pleasant rose above flood stage early in the morning of April 13th. After reaching a crest of around 43.8 feet early on the 15th, the river descended below flood stage the morning of April 16th. While the river was out of its banks, water spilled onto Route 21 at Eight Mile Creek above Ambrosia. Flooding also impacted Routes 30 and 62 near Rockcastle Creek and Ambrosia, Ohio Route 7 at Kyger Creek and Addison, Little Kyger Road and Blaville Road in Ohio, and low lying areas surrounding Point Pleasant.

The Ohio River at Racine Lock rose above its flood stage of 41 feet early in the morning of April 13th. After reaching a crest of around 44.6 feet on the afternoon of the 14th, the river returned below flood stage the next evening. West Virginia Route 62 flooded just below Racine Lock at West Creek due to the river spilling out of its banks. Sections of Ohio Route 124 and areas of Ravenswood also flooded.

A man drove past high water signs on Nicolette Road. The vehicle became stranded in flood waters and submerged, claiming the life of the occupant.
