What happened

The episode as NWS CRP wrote it up.

A long stretch of little to no rainfall led to severe drought over portions of South Texas. This included Goliad, Victoria, and northern Calhoun counties. These counties were very briefly included in the severe drought in mid-late December before a swatch of showers and thunderstorms improved conditions by the end of December.

.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Tuesday night)
Issued at 143 PM CST Mon Dec 23 2024

Our region will be under the influence of zonal flow aloft ahead
of a developing trough extending southward across the Plains with
a developing low near the TX/OK border. The low will dig further
southeast Tuesday night before lifting northeast during the long-
term period. This will kick out several disturbances into the flow
including a surface boundary Christmas Eve. This weak cold front
will approach our CWA Christmas morning. More details below in the
long term discussion.

Best shot for precipitation will be Christmas Eve into Christmas
Morning around the Victoria Crossroads where there's a moderate 40-
60% chance for showers/thunderstorms. Highs over the next two days
will generally range in the mid 70s near the coast to the low to mid
80s across the Brush Country/Rio Grande Plains. Overnight lows
ranging in the 60s across the region tonight will be a few degrees
cooler tomorrow night.

.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday through next Sunday)
Issued at 143 PM CST Mon Dec 23 2024

Key Messages:

- Above normal temperatures expected from Christmas Day through
the remainder of the long term period.

- Low (30%) chance for patchy fog Christmas morning.

- Low (20-30%) chance of precipitation for eastern areas Thursday
  afternoon through Friday night.

A weak cold front will drift toward South Texas Christmas morning,
stalling somewhere across the area. There could be a few showers
early Christmas morning in the northern Coastal Bend and Victoria
Crossroads, but most places will stay dry. South of the front,
patchy fog will be possible through mid-morning. Temperatures should
reach the mid-upper 70s Wednesday afternoon despite the front,
coolest near the Victoria Crossroads.

The aforementioned front is likely to lift back north as a warm
front Wednesday night, and we'll stay in an unsettled pattern
through the end of the week with weak boundaries in the area. A
stronger front could push through by Saturday night as the mid level
pattern changes with troughing shifting eastward and ridging
building west. With little consistency in models, there's low
confidence in any impact to temperatures behind that front, but it's
more of the Pacific variety than Arctic, so we're not anticipating a
big cool down. Temperatures will likely (70-80%) remain above normal
through the weekend.

.AVIATION...
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 1027 PM CST Mon Dec 23 2024

The last two nights winds have been 5-10 knots overnight, by
Tuesday morning winds will diminish to 5 knots or less. The
radiational fog will be expected in the band that runs from ALI up
to VCT with MVFR VSBYs expected, but there is a 20% chance for
VSBYs to be IFR between 12z and 14z. One thing I looked at was the
old Crossover Temperature fog tool which showed patchy fog over
the same area, and maybe CRP. The only issue is the boundary
layer wind and temperatures do show that there is some mixing
going on, and the a low stratus deck is possible instead. That
is evident on the latest model soundings. Otherwise, winds will
increase again by the afternoon and the VSBY and some MVFR CIGs
will mix out for the rest of the day. There is a 30% chance for
showers and thunderstorms at VCT Christmas Eve (after 00z/25) as a
cold front moves into the region.

.MARINE...
Issued at 143 PM CST Mon Dec 23 2024

A generally weak to moderate onshore flow can be expected today
through early Christmas morning. There's a moderate 40-60% chance
for showers and thunderstorms as well, mainly across the offshore
waters. Weak to moderate onshore flow will continue over the
waters for most of this week. A few showers and storms will be
possible each day. A front expected to move through over the
weekend would shift winds to the north at least briefly.
