Key Messages:
- A major to extreme risk of heat related impacts across South Texas
today, becoming moderate to major on Friday.
- A Heat Advisory is effect for all of South Texas except for the
barrier islands today.
Based on Wednesday's observations, only 2 sites reached a heat index
of 115-116 and only lasted for about an hour. Today's environment
will be somewhat similar with the mid level ridge remaining parked
across the region. Subtle differences in moisture and temperatures
are forecast for today with an increase in moisture moving in from
the gulf. PWATs around 2 inches are progged across portions of the
eastern CWA. Max temperatures are forecasted to be a couple of
degrees lower than yesterday, but with the increased moisture, the
heat indices will still reach 110-114 across a wide area, lasting
for more than a couple of hours. A few locations may briefly reach
or exceed 115 across the inland Coastal Bend as the sea breeze moves
west. If the heat indices of 115+ increase in areal coverage and
duration, the Heat Advisory may be upgraded to an Excessive Heat
Warning for those areas. But for now, will continue with the Heat
Advisory.
Models indicate cooler temperatures by Friday as the ridge axis
shifts slightly west and mid level temperatures decrease by 2-4
degrees on Friday. This will lead to slightly cooler surface
temperatures as well with heat indices ranging from 105 to 110 and a
few locations 110-113. Heat Advisory may be needed Friday for inland
Coastal Bend areas, but confidence is low at this time.
As for rain chances, S TX is expected to remain rain free today with
the ridge suppressing convective development, but with 1.8-2.0 inch
PWATs, a few rogue showers along the sea breeze can not be ruled
out, mainly across the Victoria Crossroads where there is a low
chance (10-20%). Rain chances across the remainder of S TX today
will be very low (<10%). By Friday with the ridge shifted slightly
westward, convective development may have a slightly better chance.
However, chances will still be low (<20%) and will hold off any
mention of precipitation for Friday, for now.

- Minor to moderate risk of heat related illness through the
weekend.
- Low to medium chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday through
Wednesday.
We'll see a shift in the mid/upper level ridging into the weekend
while moisture pushes into the area. By Saturday an isolated sea
breeze showers will be possible, with chances increasing as we head
into next week. Low to medium chances of convection are expected
daily through mid-week especially along the sea breeze. A couple of
mid-level disturbances will help to enhance this activity Monday
into Tuesday. Temperatures will gradually come back to more seasonal
levels with near normal temperatures through the long term period.
